Considering getting a dog - pros and cons?

Just to say, based on the 'turned down by a rescue thread' that was running earlier, I was turned down by my breed rescue when in my 40s after I had turfed out my ex.....the reason? I was single, so what would happen if I was to die??? It beggars belief as so many dogs come into rescue after a relationship break up, but just so that you have all contingencies covered, say you have made provision in your will, will return dogs to rescue or family member will take on....whatever they prefer!!

Hmm.. Seems a bit daft.
Well, all I can do is talk to them and answer any questions honestly - if they don't think I'm good enough to re-home one of their dogs then that's up to them. It seems a shame to pass on what could be a loving home because the applicant is single.


I'm going down my local centre next week to talk to them. I really like the sound of Mac - a bit older and looking for a quiet life and lots of fussing. Fingers crossed :smile3:
 
The only advice I would give with regards to getting a dog is do not be afraid to ask for help if you encounter problems. The great thing about adopting from a rescue is that rescue is on hand to help you should you encounter any behaviour issues etc. It also means, IF the worst should happen (god forbid) and you didn't have anyone to look after the dog, they will take it back.

Other than that, go see some dogs, see which one has the "that one is for me" factor. They do often find you to be honest (oh, but try not to come home with too many! :) )

my parents are coming with me when I go look next week so I'll only be looking for one. I can't wait. :tongue3:

Should the re-homing not work out, I've seen springer and lab pups local to me that I like the look of. I've always wanted a yellow lab puppy like the one from the andrex ads - it never fails to make me go all gooey and broody :tongue3:
 
Oh, and I took my mum too so I could use the "well if I'm not around my mum would look after him/her, wouldn't you mum"! Worked a treat! :-)
