So I can have something smaller/less living or even get a trailer. but unsure what car is best to pull as I doubt my estate car would be suitable?

Can anyone advise which option would be better in their experience?

Discovery or a Jeep. I have a Jeep which my local garage services (Jeep is blooming expensive!) but would recommend you do look for a proper 4 x 4 that is built for the job and check the towing capabilities. Some of the smaller 4 x 4's just aren't up to it. One word of warning is that you need to look at the running costs if you were thinking of having a 4 x 4 as your main car as petrol mounts up quickly. I have kept my Jeep this time round for towing/dogs/really bad weather again. Costs me very little to insure (even without being able to use my no claims), and as I have had this particular car for 4 years and put some 80,000 miles on it, I know it is a good one!

That's great thanks what size engine do you have? I will be buying used car. Will look at discovery and jeep. Would imagine discovery would be cheaper.

What trailers are good or not so good. What should I make sure of when looking at them?

I've always had lorries so this is all new to me!!

Im in the same position. I keep flicking between wanting a lorry, then trailers. The benefits and non benefits of both are a very close call!

Realisticly, a trailer and 4x4 for me is more economial. I have had a trailer and 4x4 before.

The best 4x4 I found was the Diahatsu fourtrak. It is basic, but cheap to run (ish) cheapest of 4x4's to insure and pretty reliable as japenese. I loved mine, wish Id never sold it!

Trailers, you can't beat a good ole ifor williams in my opinion. However, if you have the cash, the equitrek looks a nice trailer and somewhere for your tack to go and somewhere to get ready.

i second a fourtrak, i have not known one person yet not curse their discovery for falling apart or always in the garage, i think the tax is higher on dicoversy aswell but i may be wrong about that. im going for a little lorry as i work about 15 miles away, its would cost way to much in fuel, and i have to fund doing the trailer test to.

i'm doing the same... sadly selling my beloved lorry :( for a trailer and 4x4... i have ZERO idea about trailers... there seems to be such a HUGE variance in price. some are thousands, and i'm not sure why. also, have been test driving 4x4s and again, have NO idea what to get.

i ended up quite liking the isuzu pickup thing... apparently it can tow 3tonnes... so that should be enough for a trailer and fathead Raff.

i know plenty of people that tow with an estate car... but not sure if they're legal, or safe.

good luck with your search! x

Will look at towing weights on various models, just started with my estate and it states 1200 kilos. I guess I have to find out how much a trailer weighs... Off now to google lol

after thought- would it be possible to do a swap? Think I need to look at prices also...

I did a swap - I got a 7.5 ton Ford Cargo, with 1 year's plate, in exchange for a 2 year old Ifor Williams.

Swapped because my Landrover 90 was horrible to tow with (just this particular one, i have had other 90's which towed fine, this one just felt funny :p) Then the day before the swap, the oil pump went on the 90, so i bought my friend's Discovery, which towed the trailer to the meeting point perfectly and almost made me wish i'd kept the trailer :D

However, i am hoping to do more TREC next year, and a lot of them mean 2 nights away, so from a comfort point of view i would rather have the lorry because i can sleep in it :)

So yes, a swap may be feasible - I saw the lorry advertised on Ebay, too expensive for me, but the advert said a swap for an Ifor or Equitrek may be considered - i mailed her, and 2 weeks later i had my lorry :)

I have a L200 and trailer, but would much prefer a small lorry. No struggling to hitch up, horse protected from the sight and noise of traffic, particularly on the motorway. Able to camp in a lorry if necessary (atm I camp in the trailer but itn't exactly luxury living).
But a lorry standing doing nothing still costs money, whereas a trailer doesn't.

Just done all the comparing of 4x4 in March as we needed to change over and looked at towing mpg etc -we bought an isuzu pick up for oh (work car) and I got nissan pathfinder - we also rated highly - Jeep Nissan Terrano (it was what the pathfinder replaced. Remember road tax is alot cheaper on pickups as classed as a commercial. This is all the info I collected on the 4x4's I was interested in (not the pick-up type as it was for me) hope it helps!

I know their not the cheapest but towed for the first time today with OH's Range Rover Sport - fantastic! Had a long journey (8hrs) which became even longer as motorway was shut and can't fault the car in anyway other than the m.p.g.....glad I don't put the diesel in! My own lorry is HGV so wasn't sure how I'd feel driving that far on busy motorways etc as it's been a long time since I towed so far but the car made it very easy and comforatable and new horse didn't have a sweaty hair on him:-)
