Hi, we have an 8yr old Goldie who in the last 2 years has been really itchy and keeps getting patches of wet eczema. He has been switched to James Wellbeloved which helped but didn't stop it, the vet has prescribed everything from bathes of malaseb to a full coat clip down to the skin, he has had very high strength antibiotics with a steroid jab which really improved him for the time he was on but returned straight back afterwards. Vets seem very laid back and happy to take the money for no improvement so I'm wondering whether to return with some ideas for them to work up? Like blood test and skin scrape for a start! Anyone had a similar thing? We have started Wendells dog d itch type powder but he doesn't like it so its hard to get it in him.
 
Raw food?

I gave very itchy dog evening primrose oil tablets and a sulphur tincture (Denes Homeopathy) and he is so much better. His skin was all scabby and red but loads calmer now. I also cut any cereals from his diet.
 
Have your vet run T-3 and T-4 tests for thyroid function. Goldies are way up there with the breeds most prone to hypothyroid problems.
 
Sandy had this - she had a steroid injection and we put her on a food that had the lowest protein we could find. So far it hasn't come back :)
 
thyroid test and blood panel to rule out an organ issue would be what I'd consider at this age and with ongoing issues....he responded to a steroid injection as it stops them feeling the some degree of itch..but without looking further into possible causes and ruling out the most common this could be an ongoing cycle.
 
grr stupid phone. ...I'm assuming that parasites etc have been ruled out though....has he had any skin scraping or testing on any of the problem areas? any times of the year worse than others? any areas of the body particular that are a constant recurring spot? any change in skin colour or texture?
 
I have a 2yr old lab x pointer who has a similar problem.
Junior vet thought insects, senior vet said food allergy so am now feeding a dermatological food.
Spanish vet, who I know, has said skin scrape to check, but as it's a young dog it's unlikely that its her worse prognosis: some type of brain cancer with the itch being a result of a deeper level problem!
Will be watching for further discussions.
 
We had the same with our old girl.

Thyroid problem so put on soloxine, piriton stopped the itching almost instantly and she was put on Skinners Hypoallergenic Chicken and Rice.
