Cont' Kerillis bucking bronco. When you fall off what do you land on?

I will now try and roll away and land on my back. The last time I landed on my feet I shattered my leg and ankle and 18 months on it is still not 100% . Ironically, my twin sister did exactly the same thing a few months later! I would definately not try and land on my feet again unless the horse is practically stationary!!

I normally land on the base of my back and have several lumps to show for it.

However, last bad fall was off a bronking youngster which saw me turn my knee inside out mid-air, before hitting the ground hard on my side. I was so glad not to be winded I hadn't realised that my knee didn't work and was swelling to the size of a watermelon...

I tend to land on my right side, but usually this works out ok. Just a little stiff for a few days and can usually get back on again straight away. I'm another exponent of kicking your feet out once it becomes obvious you are going to part company. I was bucked off my youngster a few weeks ago and in the second I had to think about what I was going to do, I kicked out my one remaining stirrup and relaxed.

last few times I've fallen off, I seem to land on my left buttock cheek (the one with the phone in the back pocket). I think I'm going to develop a phone shaped imprint for life!

Last year, I had no time to think of stirrups - went to try a "safe" maxicob type as a gentleman's hunter... cantering across a stubble field, a covey of partridge got up and said horse went right rapidly. Apparently I described a perfect Frankie Dettori star jump - landed on my feet and toppled to my knees. OH was lying on the floor in tears, he was laughing so hard. :P

Relaxing when you realise you're going to go is the best thing imho.

Kerilli, we have had this discussion, but if there is one key factor, what you have said is it. If you are tense and rigid when you fall, you WILL get hurt and you are very likely to break something.

Realists on horseback.....I must live in the wrong area; most of the people I meet are from LaLa Land

Hmm I never fell relaxed as I fly through the air but I have never broken anything

I used to always fall on my head and after a couple of close calls the Dr told me to break both arms an legs if I had to but not to hit my head again.

So I gave up jumping and a few years on I now generally land of my fat derrier (maybe my weight gain has something to do with that). I agree it's a lot less painful but I tend to think my falls now make me look a complete numpty.

I usually manage to hang on until it's 'safe' to fall... O.o basically until I have enough control of myself not just to be flung off and I can pretty much know I'll let go and roll... well, it works most of the time. Time before last I came off on the road though with NO time to think (by the time I'd thought we were beyond where my thoughts had reached! xD) and I ended up hitting the road on my back, slammed both elbows into the ground breaking one of my funny bones (not funny) and whacked my head on the road too :/ then I immediately attempted to stand up!

And yep, I failed...

I always remember exactly how I fall somehow... I like falling off? :P
