contact details on entrance to field?

Would anyone consider it a good idea to place their contact tel number on the entrance to horses field, especially for those on DIY, grass livery etc. This is after me this morning trying to locate owner (unsuccessful) of small pony wandering in road. The nearest field with other small ponies was padlocked & I couldn't see how this little sausage had got out but walked him through other fields & left him secure in grass paddock in front of other padlocked fields with his friends????
Now if the owner had left a mobile number on the gate it would have been simple.
Will drive past this evening on way home to see if he is still there or owners r around and to make sure it is his home afterall.

There are no contact details on the fence at my yard but we live on a gun shop so it wouldn't be hard for someone to get their number and he has ours.
I have once rang some one from a number left at field gate when their horse escaped. They came out and caught him.
 
It would be good if there was a central place you could store your information on and then on the gate was a telephone number and a reference number, anyone finding a problem with one of the horses could call the central number and give the reference number allowing the central people to contact the owners..

It would never happen.
 
Makes a great deal of sense to me, I wonder how many people actually do that though?

There is no guarantee that someone would have the gumption to use it though, the RSPCA man asked me what the notice referred to...um "In case of emergency etc, please contact *******" Yep, hard to figure out

My horse rugs all had my contact number on them too, all well and good having your horse postcoded but if he's wearing a number something can be done immediately if he is found wandering.
 
I've been debating the very same, as I have just stared renting a field several miles from home and I had thought about putting my mobile on the gate.

It's opposite a pub which has my number, but I've already had several lovely unhorsey people walk over when I'm there and ask some interesting questions. Why does one horse have his eyes covered? (he was wearing a state-of-the-art fly mask) - Why does only one wear a blanket? (same horse, sweet itch) and the best one was - I thought the white one was dead because he was lying down so I walked over and tried to get him to move (yes, same horse, having a snooze, deep sleeper!).

So my only worry is that would I be bombarded with well-meaning townies, or local youths drunk after dark and happy to cause mischief by phoning me, or could it be worth it in the end if there was a real problem? Hmmmmm.
 
Some years ago a pony escaped from a field locally. I caught the pony and put it in my garage. I was then able to phone the owner because there was a number on the field fence.
 
I leave a dog tag with our address and phone number on the chain to our field gate. Its small enough that people dont notice when they walk/drive by but gives enough information for anybody who is actually looking for it
 
I have done in the past when some lovely caring people decided I was being cruel to my laminitic pony by muzzling her. They carefully took the muzzle off and fastened it on the gate.
I put a sign on the gate with my contact number should anyone need to discuss issues with my horses and also put a credit card size one on the side of the muzzle just incase people didnt see the one on the main gate.

I think it is a good idea to be honest but like others say id be worried about random calls for no reason. the dog tag on the main gate chains is a good idea
