I've been thinking about it for a while as I know he's had a bit of a chequered past so wanted more information. Finally decided to contact her and found out she's been looking for him for a while. She sold him to a home for life and asked for first refusal if he was ever sold. Obviously that didn't happen but she was so happy to hear from me and will forward pictures of him as a foal and with his mum.

Bit of a pointless post really but was so nice to get some good news about him when I know he's been through a lot for a horse so young.
 
Hey, its not a pointless post at all, I'm dithering about contacting my horse's previous owners too, so its good to hear you had a positive experience.
 
I did the same thing for my pony who is only three and a half but is on his fifth home. I contacted the person who brought him from the stud and received an almost identical reply to yours, the lady was so relieved to know where he had ended up.

The photos the lady sent of Milo as a weanling and a yearling were so lovely and it was so nice to be able to fill in some of his history

I now understand how he went from being a show pony to being gelded and sold as a potential driving pony to ending up with me with a bad bout of sweet itch

It was honestly one of the best things I have ever done, its given me a far deeper understanding of Milo and what makes him tick.

I am glad you have had a good experience of it too -Fingers crossed they do send you the pics!

WelshD that's exactly why I did it. I thought I was his fourth home and he's now 4 and a half. Turns out, I'm his fifth. He came to me not understanding any vocal commands, pressure etc. completely distrustful of humans and a nervous wreck. We're getting there now. I just wondered what had happened before me.
 
I would recommend anyone search for previous owners, it's 99% of the time a great way of learning about your horses past and is very rewarding to hear how grateful the old owners are, sometimes it's not always that way but hey ho. :)
 
This is so timely! A previous owner of my boy recognised his pictures on here and got in touch with me - she sent me some lovely pictures of him last night and a full history from when he left racing up to the girl who sold him to his last owner before me. I'm totally delighted, isn't it great to fill in the blanks? :D
 
Aww thats lovely :)

Mine came from a dealer and before that the racing yard, so not much history to dig up :o I did contact the trainer though and he sung his praises, even though he was a crap racehorse!!
 
This is no pointless at all. It's made me rather happy actually. Thank you for sharing :)
If I take the horse i've been offered I have pretty much 16yrs of history to try and fill in! :confused:

Can't wait to see the pics :D
 
So not pointless, his owner must be over the moon to hear from you and very comforted that her horse is a good home.

I put up a request over the internet asking if anyone knew who owned my horse's dam.
Eight years later I had a reply from a very nice lady who owns the dam...she'd rescued her from a dire situation, she'd had her for years but had only just seen my message. We exchanged photos, she was thrilled to see her horse's son, the nice thing is although we've never met we email each other all the time and are now great friends.
 
That is brilliant. I have the full history of my boy from the age of three. Unfortunately his breeder has died, she was very old.
 
Ah that's great! I wrote to my old pony's owner and it turns out she was broken to drive, did the PPC and all sorts I didn't know about! It's so interesting finding out their pasts :)
 
Not a pointless post at all, it must be lovely to know more. I've been umming and ahhing about contacting the previous owners of my horse but think I need to crack on and do it now, after all the worst they can do is ignore it!:)
 
We had a fabulous experience with our boys previous owner (he had one owner in between us and was passed onto a dealer). She sent us a complete photographic history from foal until she sold him 9 months before we bought him.She was so pleased to know how he was and we keep in regular contact with her via e mail and send photos. :)
 
I think I might know who your boy is! I met him a few times (and had to catch the little wotsit when he got out of the field lol)

Is he chestnut? Its just I saw that his old owner had mentioned on facebook today that she'd been in contact with his new owner so am putting 2+2 together....
 
What a nice post OP. :)

I've been trying to trace my Mollie's past and all I've found out so far is really sad. :( Poor girl seemed to have been passed around, and no sign of her ever being special to anyone so far, plus she'd had a horrific head injury at one point, and was abandoned by another owner. :(

No-one out there was looking for my girl.

She's loved now though, and I have promised her they'll be no more passing around. :)
 
fabulous. I always wondered why people don't pass on a little photo book with a write up when they sell a horse. These days it would be so easy to do with most of us taking photos and video clips.
 
aw thats nice :) I did that with my new horse, contacted the stud where he was born (unfortunatley no baby pics :( ) and then the producers he went to after that and got some nice piccys of him competing :D
 
I have always kept in contact with my mares previous owners that I bought her from.

She was a Dutch import and I found the advert that they didn't take down from about 3 years ago when she was sold as from Holland. I contacted the email adress and all they could tell me was what was on the advert... She was sold to a dealer in the UK before the previous owners got hold of her and she was quite thin when they bought her.

Oh and she had a foal at 4 called "Apart" by a stallion called "Montreal". (Learnt that by contacting the KWPN, but have never been able to find the foal, or find out where she was put to the stallion to get information from that.

If anyone knows a KWPN gelding called "Apart", he was brown/bay, and would be about 6-7 now, by a mare called Udaldine and a Stallion called Montreal, I have your horses mummy!!! :D ;)

Apart from that I know nada!! :D

Wish I could find pics of her as a foal etc but I don't think I will be able to.

OP you are one very lucky person! :)

This post inspired me to contact Missy's old owner this afternoon. Miss is 25 years young, a very graceful TB who as far as I know competed in dressage up to Prix St George level before being sold on for semi-retirement to the lady I bought her from, who ran a well-respected RS and used her in advanced lessons. I bought her last year for some pampering and gentle schooling for her last few years. Her lip tattoo is unreadable and she has no papers.
Anyway, here is where it gets a bit odd. The RS lady emailed me back and said that she didn't know that much about her previous owners, that they rang up out of the blue (she didn't know them at all) and asked if she could take Miss and her brother (he died a few years ago) and for their names not to be made public. She said it seemed a bit odd and hush-hush, and that she doesn't even know their surnames (which makes me wonder if the sale or even gifting of Miss and her brother was legal)
Now I'm having crazy thoughts like Miss was stolen at some point :eek: I am even more intrigued than ever, and I would love some good old HHO speculation on the situation.
 
Aww its lovely to find out a horses past, i have just found my horses previous owners and they came to see her today, with photo's of what they used to do with her, unfortunately mines not a happy ending found out she had a very bad injury and was given away as companion, to the man i brought her from, she has had a lovely life competing in all disciplines, and they are such lovely people i will keep in touch with.

I would imagine that the Canadian/American Jockey Clubs work the same as over here and that your mare would have been blood typed to first be registered when born. If you ring them, they might be able to check it against their databases if you have a tiny blood sample taken by your vet to match against their files. Be warned though, not likely to be too cheap. Do let us know if you do.
