Would anyone here NOT want to be contacted by the new owners of their horse?

I bought my horse from a dealers and would like to contact his old owners - but was wondering it they'd be mad/annoyed with me for doing so??

Thoughts please??

Depends what you need to know and why you are contacting them. I am sure that most people would not mind but depends on the circumstances of them having sold too...if they were heart broken etc. I would advise to go softly and preferably do it by post or email rather than putting them on the spot with a phone call. That said, I cannot imagine why anyone would not want to hear that their previous horse was well and healthy!

I don't think I'd mind as long as the horse was well!

I had a friend who's old horse got really ill and the new owners kept ringing her to tell her how bad it was, that wasn't very nice

The only other occassion when I think they wouldn't want to hear would be if it was an unhappy sale...

I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it.

I recently contacted a previous owner of my lad from when he was in Ireland. Had a lovely 30 min chat with her. Learned all about my lads life up till I got him and got an invitation to drop in if I ever go to Ireland.

Only danger with speaking to previous owners is that you might learn somnething you had rather you didn't.

i think it is a good idea. i contacted my mares old owners and they gave me so much background on her. only problem was that they thought they had sold her 6 weeks previously to a home for life only for the lady to promptly sell her to me so it was a bit uncomfortable and the start of phone call.

Cant see them having a problem unless there is a problem with the horse. They sold it to the dealer so they have no responsibility so even if there is a problem they would probably tell you. I would give it a go

Would love to be contacted by the people that now own my horses, Tried in vain to track down my last mare and have got no where .

My 14.2hh supposedly went to england .. gona put pics of him that i found up in photo gallery so if you know of him it would be brill to hear either way .

My 15hh gelding went somewhere in belfast , i last seen him in the paper jumping at the interschools in belfast again would love to hear from him .

Me personally I wouldnt care if it was good or bad news ... any news is great ...least it puts me out of my misery

I would love to hear from my horses new owners, especially to hear good news etc. As selfish as it sounds I probably wouldnt want a call telling me there was something terribly wrong although if they were calling to ask for history etc because it might help I would please to be of assistance

I dont part with mine, but if it were the case I would be happy to hear from a new owner. If me, I would be getting in car, to go and see the horse and meet them.

I would love my old horse's new owners to contact me as i miss him loads! I have been to visit him and rang his new owneres a bit at the start but now he has been gone a few months and i don't want to annoy his new owners by ringing all the time. If they rung me i would be very happy, would probably cry aswell cos i miss him but i would be very glad they phoned, even if it were about something bad, of course this would make me upset but i'd rather know and would go to try and help if i could.

Even though i told my old horse's owners loads about him when i sold him i'd still happily answer any questions i may have missed. I guess it's hard to know for your horses old owners as he was with a dealer rather than private sale so seems less personal (for them) but you should at least give it a try, if they are annoyed who cares?! At least you'll know you tried.

This is what I emailed her:
Hi

My name is Jen, in June last year I purchased Maverick from a dealer in Cheshire. I do not know if you are the same person but his passport says he used to belong to a Diane Sadaoui - so I thought it was worth a try contacting you.

I would love to know more about him, as the dealer didn't really have much information on him. I would love to hear about any history you have on him including breeding perhaps?

I fully understand if you would prefer not to contact me regarding this, but he is in a lovely home where he is adored so I hope it puts your mind at rest!

Please accept my apologies if you have never owned a horse etc!

Kindest Regards

I am always very welcoming to people who contact me about horses i've bred and sold, I send them out baby pictures and pictures of parents and ask them to stay in touch. When ive contacted people that use to own horses ive bought, they have always been happy to talk, i always approach with tact though because you don't know the circumstances they sold in but I find that everyone I have spoken to has opened up.

I occasionally send an update on Bo to his previous owner whom i tracked down in Holland. I also found out lots of interesting things about him as they had him from a very young age

I don't think i'd mind being contacted myself either...unless it was by someone ranting on to me about how bad the horse was etc...

I kept in contact with merlins old owner and felt happy to let her know how he had done in comps..... also let her know of his arthritis diagnosis last year........ she has gone strangely quiet since!!!!!!

Also kept in touch with the new owners of kids pony I sold to buy merlin (bad mummy) and they post me photos of him on photobucket!!

So yes I think its a good idea.... unless they feel that they need to hide something that is!!

I send my horse's old owners a Christmas card and an update with photos every year - and I have had him nine years. They always say how pleased they are to hear, or ask after him if they send their card first.
