Farrier issue apart...., any thoughts on its suitability for a family with two teenage girls, excessive number of dogs and horses?

We'd be buying a house with land, so hopefully livery issues won't be an issue :D

D says so long as no midgies!

Which area of Aberdeen? How close to city centre, do you know?

I'm an hour away from Aberdeen and it seems a decent enough place. I know girls who have grown up there, and they like it.

I live in aberdeenshire, not to many midges :p
Lots of competitions and a few good pony clubs and riding clubs.. don't really know what else to say really, I like it if that helps :p I would be glad to answer any questions if you have any.

Lol. Lincolnshire houses seem limited on the land front, unless one wants to spend looooooooooooooooooooooots of money, which we don't lol :D

Not close to the centre. Want a house with as much land as we can get :D. Preferably close-ish, i.e. less than two hours, to the airport...

Veeeery pretty. But can be chilly - I believe it got down to -21C in Aboyne this winter just gone... Better get stocked up with thermals - and good rugs!

We're based part of the year in Inverness-shire so not a million miles away from Aberdeen-shire

way more value for money than Lincolnshire - very friendly people, lots of dressage, strong showing element too - not a silly idea at all

Aberdeen or Inverness airport do budget airlines too :)

We love it (although have to come south for the winter as we wouldn't get to hunt otherwise!)

Thank you RM :D

We'll want to be competing: BSJA and one day event type things, certainly for D1 :). She wants to be a vet, so will need things reasonably close by (either that or study in the lorry as we go lol).

What's the weather generally like?? I hate damp. Yuck. Though do like rain :D. We'll have a school so it won't cause a riding issue :D. D1 can't cope with extreme cold and D2 can't cope with extreme heat lol. D can't cope with midgies. I'm happy with most things lol) other than the midgies :D

Mrs M it always rains in scotland! have you not heard about that yet lol! as for aberdeenshire i have no idea as i live outside edinburgh lol

Thank you RF :D. We want a change of lifestyle as well as having the neds at home, so this is an important move :D

S - ta hun :D. Hm. No hunting huh? Well, it wouldn't be the end of the world I suppose; we'd just have to come down souffff for the odd blast. We're not big hunters, this was to be my first foray, and I bet we'd have loved it, but hey ho.

If you want to do BSJA you will be best near the cabin and Faraway - so the Oldmeldrum/fyvie area - that's like 30-40 mins from airport. The roads are b roads though, so even though it is like 50 miles away, its a 60mph speed limit and always takes longer!

It depends on your budget really. If you have like 600k, there is one in the private estate behind my parents for sale - has a livery yard just down the road and offroad hacking.

You might be good to join the Scottish Showing Forum to ask about the horsey life up here as they are all dotted over aberdeenshire and can help more.

They have Burgie up near Forres/Egin, and there is Philorth and Aswanley nearer Aberdeen, and a jumpcross course is opening just outside Oldmeldrum.

If you go Banchory way it is colder as you are nearer the moontains :). Its not too bad on the coast, but saying that, I was in livery not far out city and it was -4 one year.

TequilaMist is a good person to ask about horsey stuff up here to!

I live 1hr from aberdeen airport i live between huntly and Inverurie. We moved up from Newmarket, Suffolk. We love it. So different up here there arent too many midges agree it is cold but you just wrap up! Our thermometer broke at -26 last year!! At least we had no mud!! My mare had her first winter living out last year she didnt mind to much. I am planning on starting endurnce next year it seems quite popular up here. I am sure you would love it.

The aspc website is quite good for looking at property as you select on a map the area you would like. If you want to know anything i can try to help!

I used to live in Perth and it rained there a lot more than it does up here. I love the fact we are close to a ski centre so skiing is our winter hobby and horses are the rest of the year!!!

I live north of Aberdeen! I keep my horse at Waulkmill Show Centre (google it) which is near Ellon (about 15miles north of Aberdeen) and the hacking is fantastic! It does rain but the ground drains well so you shouldnt struggle finding a house with good land.

There are so many houses for sale around here at the mo!

If you have transport there are plenty of shows to go to. There are riding clubs and pony clubs. Although the local riding club for me has a capped member amount of 100 so i'm on the waiting list! I moved back to Aberdeenshire from Warwickshire in June.

Hmm anything else you want to know?

I'm about an hour south of Aberdeen - the weather isnt too bad at all on the East coast, although certainly chillier than down south but not all that rainy - although the last week has been pretty vile! Your Daughter could go to either Edin or Glasgow uni too for vet degree....sorted! Just out of interest, what are house/land prices like up there compared with where you are now?

Cabin equestrian is a new equestrian center that has just been set up just outside inverurie...they have a website if you want a look. They host BSJA at least twice a month if not more. I don't do the bsja but I think they have intro shows and evening stuff and also the bigger competitions as well where a lot of people travel to get to... so must be good :p There is also Loanhead just outside Aberdeen which hosts some of the BSJA as well regularly too.
There isn't too many unaffiliated ODE/hunter trials imo.. maybe I am just fussy! :p Probably about 1 a month during the summer months in the Aberdeenshire area.
Weather varies... we had a very cold long winter this year, the worst in a long time, but you get through it. And I sure your kids won't complain if they get a few days off School because of it :p Summers can be wet but at least the ground isn't solid like in the south, haha.
annd I don't think you will notice the midges unless you are planning to live in the highlands :p:rolleyes:

MrsMozart, I live north of Aberdeen, about 25 miles.

I`m not from round here but I love it.
You will easily get a decent house, steadings and land for a reasonable price.

Last winter the weather was unusual, but the snow was dry, the days were sunny and it was -10 at midday!!!!
It was actually easier than a wet and windy winter!

The weather in general - well, it really depends where you stay (aberdeenshire is a big old area)

Here is a stat for you - there are more horses in Aberdeenshire than any other region/shire in the UK....

Go for it - you will love it!

me too... *just* in south aberdeenshire..... you will find huge differences in house prices the further north you go. We couldnt afford anywhere with land south of the city, but for what we paid for our teeny cottage and small paddock we could have got a ncie 3 bedroomed house with stables and several acres if we had gone north, espec out Turiff and Fraserburgh way. And yes, its wet :( there is plenty on at Brechin which is about 15mins from us, they do BE but BSJA. Other than that I think you'd have to travel to Dabbs in Fife or Loanhead in Aberdeen itself...

Plenty ODE in the area and lots of BSJA stuff going on in and around the area!

Also a lot of dressage, but my horses refuse to get involved in that kind of ****, apparently its not cool.....
