Contemplating Moving to Aberdeenshire...

I'm from Aberdeenshire but have lived in Centrsal Scotland and am now back up here.
I honestly love it - the horsey scene up here is thriving with so many active Riding and pony clubs. There are also HEAPS of indoor schools so lots on every weeeknd either through a club or run by the centre themselves. There seems to have been a huge increase recently in the number of people doing dressage so lots of BD and unaff competitions. BS has also recently been promoted with the opening of the Cabin Equestrian centre (I know this has already been mentioned - check it out, the facilities are great).

In terms of training, there are always loads of visiting instructors up this way (cos such a high demnad cos so many horsey folk!) but equally as many good local instructors. Agreed there arent as many unaff ODE ass there ised to be in the area, but just keep a look out for PC ODE's (Aberdeenshire or Deveron branch esp) as they have adult classes. Think RC's dont host them anymore because most adults who want to event are doing BE.

Check this out..

In particular look at Brownhill of Carnousie and Newseat of Gowanwell and I think you will have a pretty good idea what you can get for your money, if, llike others have said, you go north of Aberdeen. We bought a similar property in January. The hacking around us in superb - you won't be disappointed :)

Oh and yes it can be cold but last winter was exceptional, never normally gets that cold or that much snow (unless you're over Aboyne way!). The rainfall is actually very low in this area, the problem is more that its very cloudy so never gets that much sun, esp in winter but in summer its light until after 10pm - yes, you can still be out riding at 10pm!! (well i do anyway!)

Hi I live in Stonehaven -South Aberdeenshire and we have a local Baird who has a hunt every winter, he actually loans his horses out in the summer as he only uses them for winter.

The weather can be a real mixture it tends to be quite wet autumn then it gets cold with frost and then snow. My YO is a bsja judge and is always busy, brechin castle centre has 1 day events regularly and so does another yard nearer Inverurie way.

Quite a few houses with land out Banchory way for sale with quite a bit of land really nice one just on market at Inverurie that has school, stables and 3 bed house really really nice

Good Luck with your search

So many lovely replies!!! :D :D :D :D

Thank you all so much! I'd love to reply individually, but am meant to be working.... (to pay for this nice new life lol).

I'm sending all links to D, D1 and D2 for their thoughts :D.

I love wet autumns, cold winters and warm/hot summers. Hate midgies though!

D1 is worried that it will be too cold for her, but it was too cold here, so I don't see the difference. At least with the horses at home she won't be outside for so long, unless riding; the horses will live out as much as possible as that is what our lot prefers; and we'll have webcams in the stables. Gawd, if necessary I'll build her a covered and heated walkway to the stable block! :D :D :D

We have a few men that go running around where we are that go running in there kilts!! You might be lucky and run into them when out hacking!!

Veeeery pretty. But can be chilly - I believe it got down to -21C in Aboyne this winter just gone... Better get stocked up with thermals - and good rugs!

I live in Aberdeenshire. Yes it did get down to -21 (actually more than that) in some parts, lowest in my area i saw was -18 BUT we did have a freakishly bad winter!! It was the worst Id seen in a long long time. It depends where you live, If you live up a long track with no local farmer buddy to snow plough it then you may have a problem sometimes but all main & side roads are ploughed with only the odd high one closing. My Luso x TB in my siggy lives out all year including the winter just been! As long as they're rugged well and have access to shelter then they're fine.

I'd recommend it - house prices & land up here ARE cheaper than down south and there's far less traffic and people! The scenery is amazing and we're a pretty friendly bunch :) Lots of horsey stuff going on (2nd only to Newmarket for highest horse population apparently!!). Very rarely do I ever notice midgies, in fact I've not noticed them at all this year. They are mainly a problem in the Highlands.

BTW, I work in property sales and we do always have some horsey properties on our books so feel free to PM me ;) I would advise that you get more for your money OUTWITH Banchory type area as its rather pricey. I'm over Inverurie / Huntly way. As an example of what you get out here, on our books we have a 3 bed house with 5 acres, menage and 5 stables for £295k OR a 5 bed house with 3 acres and stabling for £250k OR a 3 bed house with 15 acres and a large barn with stabling in for £300k.

I think D1 should be fine so long as she is sensible, wraps up warm etc:) Silver socks and gloves are meant to be fantastic, have you tried them?

Another one from Aberdeen here!

Plus points:

+ More horses per capita than anywhere else in the UK except Newmarket
+ Lots of riding club activity: Findon, North East Scotland, Gordon Dressage Group, to name a few
+ BD at Fountain, BSJA at Loanhead and Cabin
+ unaffiliated stuff all over the place, all disciplines
+ amazing beaches
+ Plenty of good instruction to be had, both private and at riding schools (e.g. Hayfield)
+ Kinkardineshire Foxhounds: there is too hunting up here!
+ sunniest area of Scotland!

Minus points:
- not very sunny. Do they use snorkels in the rest of the country when they want to go outside?
- only two decent sushi shops, and still haven't found really good Chinese food. Some good curries, though!

I'm in Aberdeen itself, and am lucky to be within hacking distance of two large centres with good facilities and plenty of competition activity. The hacking is incredible, if heavily populated by people with dogs and prams at times!

I seriously had no idea how many of us Aberdonians were on this site!!!!

Yup, we are well hidden, sleekit wee beasites :).

Seafarer - was it surrounded by woods? If not that was Hogholm.

And The golden China is ok for chinese food.

And yes........we have good beaches!

And hills to ride up

And some nice sunsets

Unfortunately......there are some weird locals to!

i am from aberdeenshire too, about 3/4 hour north, yes its cold in winter but also very pretty
we do get a fair bit of wet/damp days in the summer (whats that??) but i wouldnt want to live anywhere else

Cabin at Keithall (near Inverurie) i havent been but heard fab reports about it they do loads of BS & also unaff

Loanhead just outside aberdeen (kingswells) do BS too

Fountain do the odd BS but loads of dressage both aff & unaff - mainly wth gordon dressage group

waulkmill one of the best venues, the indoor is ace, they hold unaff SJ & dressage, and have their first showing show in september, i think come time this show will be made much bigger

showing is lacking the affiliated classes but plenty of stuff over summer with the agri shows

someone mentioned newseat of gowanwell, thats just up the road a bit from me and is in a really nice area very friendly folk and farmers are willing to help out when needed, they are just a phone call away
nice hacking round there too mainly on roads but some off road too and the roads are pretty quiet

oh - this area seems to have more folk from englanshire than from scotland, we are being overun by you lot

you will have to learn the local language and it varies from area to area
"fit like"
"nae bad, foos yer doos"
"aye pecking"

and you dont need to be frightened of the haggis, they are friendly wee beesties and affa fine to eat
