hi! long essay coming now! :)

i have a lovely 16.1 hanoverian x tb, he is just turning 8 and does a bit of everything, but loves his eventing :D

he went lame about 4 weeks ago in both front feet, i got the vet out quite quickly and they set about doing a lameness work up for him! Nerve blocks showed that he was lame in both front feet and x-rays showed no significant boney changes, he went back into the practice the next day for a coffin joint nerve block, and although a significant amount of fluid squirted out when she injected him, he did not respond to this at all and was still noticably lame and therefore my vet concluded that there would be no point medicating the coffin joint.

we recently went for MRI's which were also not entirely conclusive - i was told there and then by the vets at the MRI practice that he had a few minor navicular changes and an inflammed navicular bursa as well, and also a bit of inflammation on the coffin joint. They're advice to my vet was to nerve block the navicular bursa (although that is a very scary nasty one :( )

my vets at home recieved the MRI's and found the navicular changes and bursa very insignificant and now want to medicate the coffin joint - has anyone had any similar experiences or ideas?? thanks :D

Sounds very familiar to me. This happened to my 16'1" TB when she was 9. I followed the vets advice, coffin joint meds (adequan), heart bar shoes, rehabilitation programme of exercise. All helped for a year or so, then she deteriorated again. PTS after 3 years.

Second horse developed identical problems, I panicked, googled cure for navicular. Took her shoes off and she came sound immediately (before any trim was applied).

It might not be what you want to hear, but its my honest experience. Google for yourself and then decide yourself. Personally I'd whip off the shoes urgently and rest the horse until it came sound. You can reshoe if you want to once the foot is rehabilitated, but its vital the heels decontract and the foot stops underruning to repair the damage.

I'm sorry if this isn't what you want to hear.

hiya i would take the foot x rays to a very old experienced remedial farriar as i have in the past had an x ray and the vet has more or less finished him off!1 showed my farrier and he said what a load of rubbish and did something different he was fine after that !! always worth getting a second opinion and afer all these remedial farrier deal with feet and problems every day good luck xx

I feel for you and I'm going through exactly same thing with my mare. I've been told she's showing no clinical signs of navicular, x rays are clean and there's no change since last done in Sept 2010. After nerve blocking worse foot she improved so vet now saying I have two choices, which are:

Nerve block navicular bursa or MRI

They are suggesting I go down the nerve blocking route. I really don't know what to do for the best. If it is navicualr what is the treatment and how affective is it?

I just want to do the best I can for her although I'm lead to believe it might be that she ends up having nerve block and MRI and outcome still might not be conclusive.

Good luck what ever you decide and I hope you have a good outcome.

Big deep breath, step back and think about the barefoot route,

Have a look at the work that Nic Barker is doing at Rockley Farm. Then work out for yourself what the best way to go is.

What sort of condition are the feet in? Is there any thrush, contracted heels etc...
Defo worth looking at rockley farm blog, there is some great info on there.
