Just wondered how it is that when I go on sponsored rides everyone looks like they are so in control of their horses...or am I just imagining it? Is mine the only one who like to go REALLY fast and tank mummy around the jumps? I mean, don't get me wrong, Louis was fantastic, but we had quite a few arguements about when and were we slowed down after the jumps and in the open spaces where there were horses cantering past and all over the place Louis needs to keep going in canter or he gets really wound up. I am lucky as mine doesn't spook and will jump pretty much anything I put in front of him...but we don't do it with a huge amount of control

yey...great to know I'm not the only one! I didn't mind in the open spaces but I few times Louis got a bit strong through the forest and I thought we'd end up in a tree!

Well I dont know who you were watching but from where me and Dad were watching not many people had control lol

Some of it was actually cringe worthy or if not dangerous.....

he he! That makes me feel better! I always manage to stop eventually and actually Loops is great once he's in a rythm but it gets really hairy sometimes when people were cantering past you in the forest...Loops thought it was a race!

You looked completely in control my dear - we just thought you were going for a quick wizz round hehe

Some people from watching it, honestly shouldnt be allowed to attend lol

He he, that's true...but you haven't seen the speed my boy can go! I'm surprised we didn't end up at the front of the entire ride!

i will not take one of mine on sponsored rides, cos he's has only one brain cell just keeps knocking around his big open space in his head - he's ok for about 10mins and then brains goes so it's not fun, cos he just wants to go at ninety miles an hour and jump everything, which would be great if i was still 14yrs BUT i'm not

i cant even really take Bloss on a sponsored ride so your lucky!! She gets way too over excited, starts rearing if i ask her to stand still, or to wait her turn to jump and if anyone comes near/past her she bronks like a horse possessed!!

I often wonder this too. I did a guided ride last year (18 horses, 10 mile hack) and all the other horses were so calm. Chex just constantly jogged, dragged me about, shook constantly and refused to stand still! I rarely go on things like this because its not even fun when he's being a pain! I end up apologising constantly as he chases after other horses, or swings round and whacks into people

:S

Now I'm worried, booked in for my first sponsored ride April 22nd, thought that whilst I may not be in total control everyone else would be and I would be ok!

My hacking partner and I had visions of mainly walking and trotting the 8 miles with the odd controlled canter (we will not be jumping) and hopefully avoiding any other horses! We must have been deluded!

Our boys won't race each other but if one goes after another horse the other will 100% follow.

Any tips? Should we try to walk whilst being over-taken at a canter? Or just keep a steady canter / trot and try to "follow" a bigger group going at a steady pace?

Don't be put off. They are such great fun. Stick with your mate, don't follow a larger group and just be prepared for your horses to be a little bit 'hotter' than normal.

Don't get stuck in ques for jumps - If you are sensible you'll never be in that situation anyway.

And just enjoy.

I'm so jelous of you all this year, as I have no horse to do rides on this year

Amymay - you are welcome to take mine if you want! He's only 14.2 though but rides much bigger! He would love someone who would actually let him jump (he's got a cracking pop but his evil Mummy won't ride him at them!)

Thank you for the positive vibes!

We won't be queuing for jumps as we won't be jumping any - unless they are step over in walk size!

honestly don't be nervous...they are SOOO much fun! I did the same as you for my first sponsored ride with Louis I went with a friend and we just walked/trotted and cantered around the course nice and calmly just to get the horses used to the environment. Mine was worked up with all the horses galloping about but we had no major issues and I really enjoyed it. He's used to it much more now and I absolutely love going to them!

My pony is 10 times better behaved on them than what he is at home, at home he is a nappy little twirp, on rides hes mega. He does still buck at gateways though, but he does that anyway!

I am generally in control, but whther I remain that way depends on the stupidity of others!!! Was on a ride a couple of years ago, on a nice wide, good ground area, where everyone was cantering - we had just come off a long walk bit, so were looking to canter, but there was a group of women in front of us spread out horizontally across the entire path walking, chatting totally oblivious to the large group of horses behind them chomping at the bit! I asked them if they could move to single file so we could walk past them (I'm generally not stupid enough to canter past!) to which one of them haughtily replied 'we are walking down here you can just stand and wait for us to get [a good half mile or more] to the end of the track. Well unfortunately the ex p2per I was on at the time decided he had had quite enough of this standing around malarky and took off through the small gap that had opened - and the other 20 or so people who had also been stuck took this as their cue to charge through too, so whilst I could have pulled him up, we would have got trampled by everyone else!

mine jogs when we supposed to be walking, canters in stead of trot, gallops instead of canter and then when trying to stand, just jigs on the spot. Would not mind, but looking at the sizeof him, it all seems impossible !!!!

No you'll have a great time. most people are very courteous and ask to overtake, don't just go galloping past you (especially if they see you having problems). We normally walk/trot/job most of the way. Sometimes have the odd jump and canter.

God I hope so! Am taking Fudgy on his first sponsored ride on Sunday, with my friends new horse, am really nervous even though we will just be walking and trotting and starting at the back, mostly about him getting over excited if other people gallop off in front or overtake at speed, my boy has a huge buck and I really don't want to end up on the floor as my confidence is really fragile at the moment or be galloped off with in persuit of other peoples horses
laugh.gif
As it's just a local ride with no jumps, held at a riding school, I'm hoping people will be calm and in control. Am I hoping for too much?

No you'll have a great time, just enjoy it (admits to looking green and nearly being sick at the start of Windsor Sponsored Ride the 1st time I went - felt really daft as apart from jogging a bit ponio was an angel and everyone was really friendly). Sound like a perfect introduction as it is normally the jumps the wind the horses up if anything does. Good luck. Have fun
