I cant find e definitive answer regarding the use of a corticosteroid called Adcortyl and its use as a NON performance enhancing medication for the treatment of arthritis in coffin joints...
I have heard " not within 6 weeks of a competition" but believe its purely hearsay - is it written anywhere ? I have searched both BE and FEI rules for a time period - but nothing .
Is it stipulated by the manufacturer or a vet ?
Any vets on here that can help ?
I am beginning to think that as a "controlled medication" rather than a "prohibited substance" there is nothing stopping its use at all ?
thanks in advance

You won't find a definitive rule regarding withdrawal/detection times, as every horse is different, and..as the occasional person has found.....some horses seem to take longer than others to process different substances. This is probably even more of an issue with intra-articular / depot-type preparations. They do publish guidelines for some products, but they are just that...guidelines.

If your horse is found with Adcortyl in its system at an "in competition " drug test....then that is your responsibility, regardless of any professional advice given!

Controlled drugs are allowed to be used out of competition, but must not be detectable "in competition".....so ...yes...there is a rule preventing it!. I think the current rules are 2 years suspension....but haven't checked that.

FEI clean sport app might give you clues.

Speak to your vet about it. Many (if not most!) horses competing FEI will have IA steroids at some point. I don't know the exact stats for that formulation but very little tends to go systemic post IA. The US federation it's a 4 day withdrawal.

Adcortyl is not listed by the FEI as either prohibited or controlled. However given its use that does surprise me so I wonder if it appears in the list under another name, or has something closely chemically related which might be listed. Probably best to ask your vet for any analogues an then call BE?

It is Triamcinolone acetonide, but the detection time listed is for Kenacord, which may be a different formulation, so might not have the same timescale.....I think racing list a minimum of 14 days, but horses have fallen foul of this.

Ah - well done. I was stunned that someone could be allowed to compete with this medication uncontrolled!
