had what could have been a nasty incident this evening. the field two of ours horses are in are up the lane about 300 metres.kids went to get horses in tonight as the light was failing.the pony shoved taylor over and took off so otto joined her,both apparently galloping flat out down the road across a couple of fields etc. meg does need a controller and taylor has been managing by wrapping the lead rein round her nose although otto wont allow you to do this,he doesnt really need a controller ( very well behaved 99.9 % of the time ) but thinking of safety here in case anything like this should happen again.hes a big lad and ash is 8 stone wet through .can anybody recommend any and roughly how much they are .thanks in advance
 
Never mind a controller head collar if they are going to dis-regard a human and take off like that I would opt for a chifney bit! I have a strong and sometimes bolshy Welshie and there is no way in earth I would hold him in a controller when he is having a paddy. I won't lead him anywhere near a road or public event without a bridle or...if I think he is wound up...a chifney.
 
hear what you saying,but she is usually controllable with the lead rein round her nose,having said that today she didnt have it wrapped around her nose and was walking directly behind my daughter.if ive told her once ive told her a thousand times never to let a horse walk directly behind her.maybe now she realises why!
 
Murph was always quite strong to lead in a normal headcollar (especially after all of his boxrest), so we bought a 'Be-Nice'. Loved it! Hardly ever had to really use it - just put it on and he knew to behave. People have different opinions on stuff like this though, but it certainly worked for us. Think they're about £24 each. i'd just put a bridle on and lead in that, i think.
kate negus do the extreme controller headcollar with a metal loop around the nose which you can rattle to give them a fright. i put one of these on my big lad twice and he's been angelic ever since, good enough for me to have sold it to a friend!
the parelli controller headcollars are good, too.
 
An old fashioned rope halter works much better than a head collar. It puts preassure on the nose and the poll if the horse pulls. They are not brilliant for steering, except to bring them round in front of you, but do work well for stopping. The cost is miniscule, if you can find them, if you can't get a horse one you can get cattle show halters, which are much the same.
 
tbh I'm surprised anyone suggested a child being given a chifney to lead a horse in with. I would suggest a control halter first, or a bridle. Rope halters are also useful.
 
thanks for the replies, i will look into it tomorrow.in the meantime ill ask YO if they can go out the back until something is sorted.at least that way if she gets away from her again she will only end up on the yard!
