Controlling a strong horse out hacking?

Shoulder in - all the way one side then the other , then a bit of haunches in or travers … try to avoid a strong contact just vary his position all the time , horses can only think of one thing at once so if you get his brain concentrating on you then he will shut up about going faster …. Or old school if it’s safe to do so - push him on faster , most horses are fundamentally lazy he will probably want to slow down … the secret is not to let him and he will soon decide fast is not so great

As as very green riders, we were told that if the horse is getting too fast on a narrow forest track and we can't slow it down, turn its head into the trees.
