Controversial FEI reining video - Abuse in the warm-up ring

I know nothing about reining but my observations are that the horse looks sad and broken. There was absolutely no need for those jabs and it is totally unacceptable! Not nice to watch and as a result, could not watch it all. :(

I really hate horses being treated like this, which is why I don't do competition of any description. People spoil all these disciplines by cheating, and trying to get an edge on their competitors, they forget that they are nothing without a horse, but its the horse that gets the shitty end of the stick.
Reining, racing, dressage whatever the people who abuse the horse to win are scum. That's why they say,
Scum always rises to the top.

Jesus! Rollkur hit the Wester riders. :(
This is awful to watch. Anyone else notice the horse doing the sliding stop in the background at 1:55? His back legs literally slide underneath him due to complete disconnection through his back!! :/

In January of this year, the FEI set up three working groups to do a thorough review of all aspects of the discipline of Reining. The review is ongoing and a full statement can be viewed on our website at

We will be posting regular updates.

Frankly am shocked anyone with equestrian sense needs to review this type of practice.. given the FEI's hedge sitting re Rollkur in the dressage (and I have witnessed it being used in Eventing and Showjumping too) arenas I will wait for proof of the FEI's good intentions to ensure abuse is not tollerated in any of it's affiliated competitions.

Who else wants to slap the riders face?

I'm afraid i'd do more than that, like put a bit in his mouth and saw and saw and saw at it, whilst prodding him with sharp spurs in his sides whilst going round and round.
I am insane with anger at seeing this, the horse has it's ears flat back, it back end hunched under in protest and generally looks miserable. YUK.

Can you imagine?

This is the last line in the FEI statement:

"As the international governing body for equestrian sport, the FEI condemns all training methods and practices that are contrary to horse welfare."

How can they put that in print and then do nothing when horses are warmed up so abusively at an FEI event? I mean was that warm up HELPFUL to the horse's welfare??

I fear the FEI are too beholden to vested interests to come off their fence sitting .. would love to be proved wrong though.

Here's his bits for sale. http://trainingtack.com/bits.htm

All that's needed now is a crank noseband or similar to stop the horse opening his mouth to 'resist' the bit! :( (tongue in cheek here btw :( )

I think this is all totally unacceptable. I'll stop at that mild comment.

I agree, that poor horse's spirit has been truly broken. The horse looks so darn miserable, afraid to lift it's head. The last jab to the end of the video is awful, as they all are, but the horse is doing all that is asked of him, yet still gets jabbed in the mouth for all his efforts. Sad and cruel.

I totally agree, but it does look as if the FEI are taking this seriously.

I am shocked at the video, I was under the impression that although western riders use harsher bits, the contact is so supposed to be super soft, that is not what is evident in this video. I am also shocked that the stewards seemed to think it was par for the course and did absolutely nothing to stop him, they just sat in their ivory towers looking rather bored

Yep, the western bits have large shanks and sometime knotted bits where the reins connect to the bit, so without even any contact on the reins they already feel pressure and are alert to any movement.

I couldn't believe the steward at the start seemed to be texting!!

Thats just disgusting. Well done to Epona TV for posting in the face of legal threats and here's hoping the FEI take it seriously
