Controversial.........would you ever eat horse meat?

How much would you pay per week to keep your horse at this yard??

i was livid after watching janet street porter on the F-word a few months back, and this is one of those issues that i often get into heated debates about with other people. i just wondered what others' opinions are?

i dont know, maybe i have without knowing it.

id never say never though, id have to be pretty darned hungry, but food is food if youre starving.

I ate it once by mistake. I knew it was not beef immediately and said to the waiter that this was horse-meat and asked him to take it away. He went a rather cerise shade of pink bless him.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone eating any herbivore animal reared for meat - but I can't really get my head around people eating carnivorous animals.

I happily eat game meat including venison, pheasant etc although I have no intention of eating horse. I don't have a problem with others eating it, but I just don't want to eat it myself.

im not sure i can quite see the difference - an animal is an animal, and in my mind, a herbivorous animal is no different in terms of its understanding, consciousness etc of what is going on.

so, would you rather eat horse than dog? if i was forced to choose between the two (and i think i would rather starve for weeks several weeks than choose either) i would eat dog.

absolutely. although i make an exception for prawns, even if they are scavengers, because they taste so great!
we should eat horse meat in this country. better for the poor things to be shot and eaten, than shipped abroad alive. it would be good, low-fat, cheap meat. and if we ate enough rubbish horses to actually end up with a slight shortage of horses in the u.k., then those that remained would have a higher value and, most importantly, be treated better. *awaits deluge of abuse*

Pretty certain I have eaten it in France, and probably as an ingredient in salami too. I don't have any issues with eating any meat that has been kept humanely and goes into the food chain. Don't really see how horses are that different from any other livestock in that respect.

I have eaten horse. It was nice actually. I really cant see the difference between eating horse and cow. Countries that eat horse rear them in similar ways to cows, its not like they go down the local pony club and borrow a few ponies for dinner.

Why is a horses life more important than a cows, just because we dont "see" cows as pets???

As long as the animal has had a happy life has been well treated and humanely slaughtered, I cant see a problem with eating any animal..... barring endangered species!!

Eh? I'm not talking about the living animal, I'm talking about the meat. No I wouldn't choose to eat a carnivore over a herb/omnivore.

I have never eaten it ( that I know of), but will not say that I "never" would.

If my children and I were ever in a position that we were starving , any horse on my property would be fair game.

I would never try it out of choice however. It's not that I think eating it is wrong, it's just that I am touchy with meat anyhow: especially those that are "strange" to me.

I am one greusome peta documentary away from being a veggie again

Not knowingly - bought some in France by accident, realised and could not get it out of the apartment and into the bin fast enough - did not realise how much it would upset me!!!!

i just dont think i could physcially bring myself to chew it and swallow it wud most probably be sick - saying that i quite often have difficuly eating meat if its ona bone or is fatty or if it looks like meat ie if its tiny chopped up square chicken in a curry can eat it fine. which is very weird just makes me queasy.

I would much quicker eat a horse than a dog, in fact I don't think I could ever bring myself to eat dog.

I have a great mental image of you stalking horses across your land

I think dissections make you a bit immune to the shock value of dead horse.
I've eaten horse (in Switzerland, by accident) but it isn't a big deal to me.
I believe it's the quality of life, and the humane slaughter that's important in animals for human consumption.

I've never actually thought of it this way before and I think this is actually a fair point. Why don't we eat horsemeat in this country? Is it purely from lack of demand?

we don't eat horses in this country due to squeamishness. for the same reason that most people won't eat rabbit. (in fact, it's one of the few meats i will eat.) i agree that the good life and humane death of an animal is more important than what animal it is.
a lot of horsemeat was eaten in the u.k. during and just after WW2. ridiculous that we don't eat it now... it is no different to eating cattle imho.
i wouldn't eat dog, and i won't eat pig, because they're more intelligent than dogs. other than that, as long as it's had a great life, serve it up!

I have eaten France several times in France and hate to say it but it tastes pretty good. If the animal is killed correctly then what does it matter. As said I would rather my horse could have a use when the time comes than to pay for cremation etc. Though I could not personally eat my own horse!

No I wouldn't. Exactly the same I as I wouldn't eat dog and that is personal choice. My own personal feelings are that horses and dogs have served us faithfully, through hundreds of years, carrying us through wars, working the land with us, serving us and are more than just a domestically reared animal for meat in my mind. We owe them more than just being tagged as 'rubbish' horses.

but Boudicea, i want to agree with you, but the fact is that a lot of horses are abused, starved, generally mistreated in this country (just look at the pics of some of the charities, or go to a sale), and travel horrendous distances in horrible conditions to be slaughtered.
it would be a wonderful thing if all horses were well treated, and if all dogs were well-treated, in this country let alone around the world, but it is unlikely to happen.
if there was a shortage of them, they would be valued more highly (emotionally, not just in terms of ££s) and better treated.
seems like a daft comparison, but do you remember 25-odd years ago when baby tortoises were being imported in their hundreds of thousands as pets? you could buy one for a couple of quid. huge numbers died in transport, most pet ones died too, due to ignorance and inappropriate feeding/treatment etc.
now that there is a ban on import, they are very hard to get hold of, and the ones that are here, are very well treated.
i can see a parallel, anyway! i know what i mean!

Horses are no greater....or lesser....than any other animal on this planet.

horses are a domestically reared animal for meat in many countries of the world - are you suggesting that the ones purely raised for meat in these countries are far less worthy than the steeds we travel around the countryside on?

Apparently it's supposed to be because in ancient times the Celts worshipped Epona [the Horse Goddess] and eating meat is considered a sacrilege

well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
