Controversial......

Absolutely!! How can jods cost so much?! I refuse to pay more than £35, but yes I'm incredibly tight and would never dream of buying proper horsey shampoo

I agree that I cannot get on with riding tights, I haven't found a pair that don't make me look like a size 2 sausage in a size 1 case, or fall down every 5 minutes.

HOWEVER, silicone seats/knees on proper breeches I actively seek out - I don't feel too stuck to anything and just prefer them. I rode the other day in my gym leggings and just didn't like the feel.

I've got to admit, I don't particularly care what I look like, so I do occasionally wear riding tights (along with a t-shirt long enough to cover my bum). I have the Shires Aubrion ones because they're thin enough for hot weather, have a thigh pocket that's almost big enough for my phone, and were reduced to clear! They allegedly have silicon knee patches, but my legs are so short that the patches are actually on my calves and covered by my half-chaps.

I've tried sticky-bum jods once and didn't notice any difference whatsoever, so figured it wasn't worth either deliberately looking for them or deliberately avoiding them.

Otherwise, I'm a big fan of Shires Wessex knit-leg breeches. You can usually pick them up for under £20 and they're exactly the right shape for me. I just wish they came in bright colours and had a thigh pocket.

Nope. Can’t do riding tights. And definitely can’t do silicon Seat. Knackers my lovely saddle!
Suede seat breeches for me. Although they are much harder to find these days.
I wear running leggings over white breeches on show days to try and reach the arena still clean. Rode in them for an arena walk - never again. Too Slidey.

We have mamil’s on bikes.....there is one particular who wears white Lycra with stripy pants......

Be grateful he’s wearing those pants.

I used to cycle to work when I lived in London. There was one bloke who always got to Parliament Square around the same time as me in the mornings. I don’t think I’d recognise his face if I passed him in the street, but I could pick his undercarriage out of a line up. Scarred me for life.

Would I be showing by age If I admitted that I remember Sticky Bum Jods to be the very latest in fashion and riding technology. So many problems when sitting on a conveniently placed bale of straw in Sticky Bums... I'm sure I've broken many, many washing machines with the attached debris. I swear Sticky Bums have a coating of "no nails" to ensure maximum stickibility.

I may move on to riding tights (if they come in elephant arse size) but I've a fair few pairs of jods with not too many holes in so may take some time for it to be necessary to embark on new journeys ;)

Don't do riding tights because they fall down. But silicone on knees I love. They are very useful for hill work (pretty much all my hacking), and given that my legs are wibbly wobbly I find the silicone helps keep them where they are supposed to be (psychologically as much as anything, it make it much easier to feel where your legs are)

Just nope. It has to be jodhpurs or jeggings at a push if it’s too hot in summer.

Might as well ride in my gym leggings if that’s the case and seeing my big butt doing squats in those is more than enough without my arse turning riding tights see through.

As an aside my arse is still big when I’m a size ten so would never even think of buying riding tights ????

You all are totally making me laugh. When I rode I was slim so I could have probably pulled off the tights. Now days I would scare the children.

As with others, riding tights neither flatter my body nor my wallet.

But my teenage daughter looks stunning in them. Laughing about the silicon sticking to car seats.

Always wear the noble outfitters riding tights, I think I've gone past the age of caring what I look like, it's all about the comfort for me!

I like the Dublin warm-it riding tights as the fabric is quite substantial and I love gel seats and find them less restrictive than the faux suede ones. They don’t feel hot in summer either. I wear a belt if needed as they also have be,t loops. It feels weird riding without any kind of grip now. I don’t think they look any worse than normal breeches. There are some really thin ones that I wouldn’t wear.

I am a skinny jeans for riding type person. I hate the shape of my legs and much prefer bootcut jeans but skinny ones work better under half chaps - no excess jean to fold in which you will invariably manage to do in such a way as it rubs like hell - but only when you are 10mins into a ride and can't be bothered sorting it.

I couldn't do riding tights etc. Really not my scene.

When I was heavier I wore the Noble Outfitters ones, with the suede knee. They were 100% comfortable, lovely wide waistband and I didn't think they looked silly. I did try a silicon seat pair of riding tights, but found that uncomfortable as the tights stuck to the saddle and my leg rubbed around inside them!

Since I lost weight, I prefer the Derby House silicon seat breeches. Very comfortable and don't look like a sausage. They have done no damage to either my suede seat dressage saddle or my buffalo skin jump saddle. Some of the cheaper ones have had sharp silicon though, so I would always avoid them.

I guess I’m in the minority as I prefer them! Sticky bum and all! I’ve still got some breeches too (you can’t seem to get get waterproof/water resistant riding tights for the winter), but I’d rather have tights. I don’t like the ones that only have sticky knees, though, as they seem a bit pointless to me. The fabric is often quite slippery without the silicone, and the knees end up half covered by my boots, so it’s sticky full seat all the way for me. But then I do wear either a size 8 or 10 depending on the brand/cut (and my bum is almost none existent - shame that isn’t also true about my belly!) I won’t spend more than about £40 on them and have picked up several pairs either on sale or on eBay for around £25.

I don't know how I ever rode in jeans, tbh. I don't know that I ever could again. I just love my (non silicone) breeches too much.

When I was younger I would ride in jean shorts or shorts and full chaps. I was such a savage then. ?

There are some thin jeggings out there that might be ok, but still.

I'm not a fan of riding tights can bring myself to try them as just think I'd look awful and full of lumps and bumps! ??‍♀️

I love grip, but I’m a breeches kinda gal. So Pikeur Candela with grip for me, all the way.

I love Pikeur, but for some reason have forgotten how to work their sizing! Anyone shed any light on this for me?
Thank you

I'm too cheap to pay for riding tights! The prices are bonkers...

I either ride in my yoga pants (note I don't actually do yoga but the material is thicker than leggings and I pay about £10 when they're on sale), or if I'm fearing death I'll ride in my stickybum breeches. I need to buy some more breeches but I'm horrified by the price of them too and can never work out sizing or if they are actually high waisted or not...

Recommendations for high waisted, full seat (suede or silicone just as long as it keeps me in the saddle for the spook, drop and launch maneuvers) that don't cost more than my monthly livery rent gratefully accepted!

I have a pair of Pikeur grip breeches - definitely not cheap - and they leave the pattern on the seat of my lovely soft leather saddle (and they stick to my leather car seats). So I have stopped using them with that saddle (they are fine in my friends wintec, so get saved for riding in that). The suede ones are so much better, but seem to be getting replaced by the horrid grip.

Sizing wize:
40 = 12
42 = 14
44 = 16
I think that if they are 80, 82 and 84 they are the long versions. I am a short arse so don't have to worry about that!

Yeah, the 80's are long sizes with Pikeur.

I have many pairs of Pikeur Lugana breeches as well as Lucinda. Both non grip! The Lugana is a high rise, the Lucinda is a lower rise.

The Horze Grand Prix breeches aren't bad and you can usually get them for 20% off if you pay attention to their sales. The bummer is that they only come in black or white for the non grip version.

I did get a pair of Lugana breeches and 2 pairs of Tredstep breeches, all suede seat, on sale at Hope Valley recently.

Thank you for the help with sizing will keep it in mind.

Though I have literally just order some breeches, they SHOULD be the same as a pair friend has that I really like.
Best part is they were on offer on sports direct £25 a pair so got 2.

They are the HY-performance badminton ladies breeches.
Nice material and fairly high waisted.
Should arrive tomorrow, I will update ?

Will do should be here tomorrow. I'm not entirely sure on sizing either, but went ahead as I really liked the style/material of my friends. Fingers crossed they fit me ???‍♀️

I'm definitely in the wear whatever works for you camp. I rode English it was breeches which fit full length on little old me :) Now I have 2 pairs of Ariat Bootcut Riding jeans on rotation and they suit dumpy old me quite well. I do also own a pair of those decathlon water proof breeches in black so a naff pleather look and those on a western saddle mean you can't dismount even when you want to, so I've hardly worn them. If riding tights are like running tights then they must be mega comfy and I can see the attraction and if I were to run or ride English again I'd probably go that route, would have to shift weight before I attempted either though.

I often wonder what the hell people are doing in the saddle, when they say that jeans will rub...

Mind you, I am completely feral and often ride in shorts. The only issue is sweat sticking to the saddle. Much easier if you're rising / standing the whole way!

I couldn't ride in shorts. My exercise saddle is plastic so I would just stick to it and not in a pleasant way!

Ah now shorts definitely required me to wear chaps once I got older when riding English as the stirrup leathers pinched something horrible. Which would be an issue in a western saddle as the stirrup leathers are a flat wide strip :) There was a also a dealer who was horrified that I tried a horse out in jodhpurs and short boots with no half chaps, again that never cause me an issue but I understand for some the leathers pinch their legs again. All boils down to what suits you and your riding style.
