Well.....its happened....I have been converted. After 35 years in the saddle ( and alot on the floor..) I have been turned. I have always had big, flashy, quirky, difficult horses until 18 months ago when one had to be retired and the other one had a serious tendon injury. At the time I had just broken my leg coming off a youngster I was bringing on for a friend so it was ok that we were all broken at the same time.
Jump forward to last weekend....The sun was shining..the birds were singing..I had a bottle of Savuignon waiting in the fridge when the pang hit me. I should be out riding.....It had been too long...,.
The mini shetland ran and hid from me..So I asked my neighbour if I could take her daughters cob up the road for a pootle. She almost bit my arm off and frog marched me to the shed before I changed my mind...
This lovely boy hasn't been ridden for months but strangely I didn't feel at all concerned especially when he started to snore as I tacked him up.
I managed to mount from the ground which is the first time I can truly remember this happening as normally rides have to be planned around step ladders hidden in hedges or sturdy gates that would hold my menopausal bulk and off we went.
We certainly would not have given Red Rum anything to worry about but OMG I just loved it. The sense of relief of not worrying about a leaf blowing around or an errant bunny crossing our paths was immense. It was joyous and after years of having rescue remedy on a drip before I rode some of them it was heaven. I could actually look into peoples windows at the same time !!
So I am converted....I have decided that I am going to enjoy this lovely boy until I find the right COB for me...There I said it...COB...and as I enter the autumn of my riding days I am going to enjoy every minute without having to ensure that my under garments are matching before setting off for a ride...xxx

Thanks for making me smile :D

Glad you had a lovely ride, and good luck with finding the cob of your dreams!

(By the way, I know what you mean about the matching underwear... thank goodness my big flashy one is becoming more and more sane as he gets older, and recently my underwear matching standards have started to drop ;) ).

You'll never lose the need for matching underwear just in case! (It's a family joke here, as I had to go and change my bra before I did a long car journey)
I downsized to a fell pony a couple of years ago, best thing ever! Hope you find yourself a cracking cob to have fun on!

I love this bit, I have a cob and my mum has a cob and they both snore while being tacked up. I ride hunters for my morning job - old-enough-to-know-better hunters that still spook at a bird in the hedge or a child shrieking - and it's so lovely to take my girl out and she will fall asleep while I talk to people, walk past alarming birds and children without batting an eyelid and is generally just a pleasure and joy to own. I have nothing to prove, I have a cob for exactly what they are, a nice, quiet, easy ride :D

And making sure the legs etc have been trimmed!!!! :D

Have fun, cobs rule!

Biglets Mummy - I am the same. I have always had TBxIDs and large ones, which I have competed BS and dressage. My current horse is 17.1hh chestnut full ID who I love with all my heart HOWEVER we bought a 15hh traditional cob for my daughter and I fell in love! So now my 17.1hh is up for sale and I have bought myself a 15.2hh coloured cob for myself. In my twilight years and being only 5'2" in height I was struggling with my giant to even rug up, tack up etc so I am trying to find him a super home (had him 4 years!) I am a converted cob fan! My new stead is not a looker like my ID but he is smaller, knows his job and a star and I forgot how nice a lazy hack out can be...bliss!

I love looking in windows, but feel very awkward when there is someone on the other side looking back out....... ooops (cue quick, flamboyant trot away)

How lovely! You wouldn't want mine, freaked out in a major way at someone calling for me yesterday and tried to jump out of his stable!

Could you carry on riding the cob from last weekend til you find your own?

ah thats fab :D

my current one is 1/2 cob (her dad)!.... she is a saint... 3.5 just backed and I took her hacking around a strange outdoor and on a little hack accross a road...shes only been ridden for 2 weeks :)... shes utterly safe!!

I too have had the crazy youngsters/warmbloods and x-racers - just isnt fun anymore!!

bring on the cobs :D

Cobs are the best hacking buddies. I met a friend of mine recently whilst out hacking. She had gone for a walk with her little boy who was then crying and too tired to walk back up the long muddy hill they had come down. I put him in front of my saddle and Finlay carried us both the mile home. Happy toddler, happy mum. Winner. Couldn't do that on a smart flighty beast!
