Converting garage to indoor stables - any thoughts?

Has anyone any experience of converting garages into stables? I have a large double garage with a pitched roof, so plenty of height and with a good floor and am considering making an indoor stall. It would be a good 12' by 14' space I should think. There seem to be a few companies around that sell the internal partitions. Any thoughts on this?

Don't waste your money on buying internal partitions, get yourself a builder/handyman or do it yourself & build the partitions from concrete blocks. It will be alot cheaper.

As others have said I think you need planning consent for change of use, and as the use is now to house horses there are some rules (I think) relating to the distance of the stables from the dwelling. They may also ask to see plans for muckheap disposal (which might not be a problem if you already have horses there).

Regarding the partitions, beware of DIY botch ups. A livery yard I was at had single freezeblock partitions with no foundations and the horses pushed over about one wall a week. You can certainly do it yourself/get a local builder, but make sure they dig down the concrete to put foundations in, use good quality mortar and build something suitable for a 3/4 of a tonne animal rubbing its bum on.
 
My neighbour converted her garage into stables the only problem she had was one of them kicked the wall and it moved off the foundations.
