just looking for ideas really, has anyone converted or use old farm barns or out buildings for stables .the farm we might be moving to only has barns currently used for cattle so we would need to make some with partitions some how or have them loose in the barns but not sure if that would be safe,if anyone has pics too that would be great thanks

Easy-peasy, think of how many ex dairy farms that are livery yards.

You can buy sectioned stables and get them bolted to the concrete floors, or just loose house them with a corral, even easier.

The best arrangement I have seen is an open fronted cattle shed with individual stables in the back then the front half is part of a yard area, and the yard has a gate into three grazing paddocks, yet it is large enough for the horses to be left in, on hard standing to eat hay in the yard. By choosing which gate to open they can have the freedom to go into any field, can be kept in the dry and they even learn which is their own stable.

I don't know but isn't equestrian a change of use? I know some people who have had problems converting cattle sheds into a small livery yard and have planning turned down. Might be worth checking.

thanks orangehorse thants whats what i was thinking of,i think thats what we will do. thanks ajn1610 but im not starting a livery yard its just for personal use sorry didnt make that clear.

in theory you would still need PP as the PP for the barn is agric and leisure horses are NOT agricultural. best to get the PP as its unlikly to be a prob if private use, but otherwise you could have probs when you come to sell.

hi thanks will ask about pp,we are only renting and putting maybe 2 or 3 partitions up so i dont think we will need pp ,really we are only looking at how we could use the space in terms of stabling at the moment, but thanks for your replys

We've just looked into this, I think you might get away with it if it was moveable partitions as you can say it is just temporary.....But 'officially' it is definitely change of use and yes you do need to go to the local council to get permission.

going to ring up planning office later,i think your right if there not perminant and movable you can get away with no pp,hopefully we dont but if we do i will have to loose house them till we get pp thanks
