not sure about cool boots, have never found any nice ones, so ill be interested to see what people say
but...just thought i would say that imo neo ice isnt very good, sort of along the same subject line
I bought some fairly expensive gel filled boots/wraps which you are supposed to soak in cold water for an hour before use and they are then supposed to stay cold once on the horse's legs.
I went eventing, soaked them from when we arrived and then applied them under travel boots for the journey home. When we got home a couple of hours later the boots were very warm so had absorbed the heat from my horse's legs and then created a warm wrap around his legs rather than a cold one as his legs were also very warm.
I thought I had followed the manufacturer's instructions but I don't think I want to take the risk again so the boots are now in the bottom of a box in my tack room.
Money well spent - I don't think! I have now reverted back to a bucket of cold water and a sponge to cool down tired legs and a bit of cooling gel before the journey home!
I have the Aerborn Cool Sport ones and like them, they are gel which stays cold whn soaked in water - is easy for taking in lorry as you don't need to keep them frozen or anything and they are better than the cool bandages that you have to chuck away. Think they are about £50 a set but I have had mine for a few years and they are still going strong! V useful for having round the yard if they get bumps or knocks.
Kickon - these are probably the same ones - but I never leave them on that long, I was always told to leave them for 20 mins or so then re-soak, then on a gain. I do this at events and then put a clay on under bandages before travelling home, these usually stay on until the next morning. It is what we used to do with the eventers when I was grooming so i have just adopted the same thing with my boy!!
I use the Aerborn ones too and really really rate them The yard i worked on used them aswell. I put mine in to soak before I go Sjing, then put them on when have washed G's legs off whilst hanging around waiting for results etc. He has them on for 30mins at least on sunday and they were still cold. Very important you dry them out between uses though, otherwise the crystals break down and dont work aswell. Really rate them
Got mine from old Dairy saddlery when they had the offer on
I have the puffa ones which are, I think, essentially the same as the aerborn ones. They stay cool for about 15-20 mins on the legs then need another soak. I am quite happy with them but I don't really use them alot. How about bonner bandages though?
The Aerborn ones are good, but the only things that will stay colder for longer are the Bonner bandages. Expensive but worth it, especially if you intend on putting travel boots over the top and taking the horse home before you take them off. Otherwise the best thing is cold water!

ditto this and add, the purpose is to cool the legs down i was always told that the first half hour is the most important so would be waste of time to leave them on any longer without recooling!!!
I also have Puffa boots- but they are a bit heavy and in summer warm up quickly. Agree with Silmarillion- cold water hosing is great if you can find a hose!
I can't recommend any boots but just wanted to add to cooling time 'debate' above. I am surprised to read that someone would want to cool the legs for longer than 30 minutes after exercise. I was always told that you cool first for 15-20 min, then a warm wrap comes on. That's what we did when grooming for show-jumpers. I used to use a dual action gel by Leovet which cools the legs in first instance them warms up to start regeneration process (in theory anyway
I use the FMBs which I got off ebay for about a tenner. You freeze the inserts (I then keep them in a coolbag with ice blocks) and they are saline so heat up to leg temp in 30 mins, proving optimum cooling time.
I like the look of the aerborn ones but they are too pricey for me, £100 for 4 (give or take) - ouch!
WRT clay, at the BE roadshow thing, they said only use it for bangs as if you cover and bandgae it heats up, thus destroying the effect. What I do sometimes though (if I forget the boot inserts) is to put on ice tight whiclst he is walked off, then wash it off before putting on travel boots to go home. Seems to work as well as anything else.
aerborn ones, brilliant boots. At bigger events, get water and ice in the bucket to cool them down. Remove every 20 mins, get wet/cold again and then reapply if necessary
Ive also got some puffa ones, but they have tended to slip down more than aerborn ones (better straps/elastic)
I use Neo-Ice bandages. They seem to be really good. I like them. You just buy the bandages which are I think a fiver each so £20 to begin with, then just buy sachets or a bottle of liquid to recharge them. Am about to buy a bottle now for £12 which does 15 recharges. Ive wrapped them round my arm and it made it tingle and go cold so I assume they work!
