after competitions i normally cold hose my mares legs; but they still puff up a little bit during the night.
is it worth getting some of that cool gel stuff and bandaging over the top of it or just soaking the bandages and put them in the fridge?

or do i buy these:

and then bandage over the top before we come home from competing? and then cold bandage when we come home?

I have always used Ice Tight rather than bandages after racing, eventing and hunting. Bandages can cause pressure problems - we had a pointer who was bandaged after racing and she ended up nearly dying, losing all the hair on her leg, and is now just about paddock sound, all because the bandage was slightly too tight.
Ice Tight is fab - it's bloody messy, but stays cool for hours (I use it regularly on my dodgy knee) and as it dries it provides a little bit of support without the worry of it being too tight. The only thing I will say is that it says on the pack that you should apply it, the wrap legs in cling film and bandage over the top, which seems to completely defeat the object of the Ice Tight in the first place. If you do that, you end up with very hot, puffy legs in the morning!

I use the Geleze, they are really good. I put them in iced water at the competition then when we have finished for the afternoon I use them under stable bandages. When we're not going home I leave them on for an hour or so then take them off, when we are travelling home I travel in bandages with the Geleze underneath. My pony's legs always seem to react well and very rarely puff up even after a hard competition on hard ground when I use them. Highly recommended by me as so much easier than washing leg ice off!!!!

thanks, i will talk to mum and find out, so you dont bandage on top of the ice tight?

because i could put it on just before we leave a comp, then boot up and when we get home put a bit more on? then wash it off the next day?

I have always used Like Ice with brown paper (feed bag) under bandages, it's not that messy as you can just brush it off in the morning and so far it seems to have always worked well.

thanks, me and mum are going to have a look around, and will just cold bandage until then

x

I've only bandaged over Ice Tight and Like Ice once, and never again! The poor horse was sweating like a pig, and his legs were like balloons.
With the racehorses and eventers, we put looooaaaads on before they go back on the lorry, and then just leave it and wash it off in the morning! It's FAB!

I've done ice tight both ways - wrapped it in soaked brown paper and bandaged on top, horses legs were fine and IMO the bandage provide support, but you need to be able to bandage properly :) you have to wash it off anyway.

Have done it with just ice tight and no bandages, which is obs v easy but means you can't put travel boots on to go home as it would still be wet.

Using the bandage on top is safer for travelling as still got protection; you can take the bandages off at home :)

I now put it on and don't cover it, as IMO the real good thing about is the 20mins it takes to wash it off! Lol
