cooling down wooden stables

My stables are newish wooden ones, half lined walls and an apex lined onduline roof . Front windows have grill and perspex "glass", which I assumed you could remove, but you can't. There are open windows in the back wall. They are reasonably cool until about 2pm, when they lose the shade of the trees and are like ovens. I spray the walls and bedding down, which drops the temperature dramatically, but only short term, so end up chucking them out, as there's shade in the field, but the flies are dreadful. As I think it's clear that this sort of weather is going to become the norm, I need to address these issues.
Could anyone suggest any sort of insulation I could add which wouldn't act as a lovely, snuggly rat nest in the winter? Preferably something that could be sprayed into/behind the existing boarding?

Can anyone recommend a reliable, non fire hazard stable fan, which I can safely leave running in each stable (bearing in mind that one of them WILL try to play with it)

And most importantly, and immediately, how can I cool down my poor baby Swallows? They only hatched Saturday. I'm spraying the roof with water every few hours, I was thinking of tin foil on the roof outside, but am reluctant to attract the attention of the magpies, who went in and ate last years babies...

Thanks to all, and hope you're staying cool!

If you can go to Homebase or B&Q get a silver lined ground sheet/tarpaulin and lay it on the outside of the roof above the swallows. Have the silver side up and it will do a good job of reflecting the heat. It is how I am keeping my conservatory cool.

You need something like this but the trouble with fans is that they just circulate the warm air. If you put a bucket of ice in front of the fan or put a damp cloth in front of the fan (but not over it) it should keep things cooler.

Or you can use ice water bottles - fill four plastic bottles – the bigger the better – with water. Put these bottles in the freezer until the water has completely frozen. Once it has, take the bottles out and place them on a tray. Cover the bottles with a damp cloth. Place the bottles on the tray right in front of the fan, allowing the air to breeze over the bottles and cool down.

Thank you, I was thinking of something a little more robust, which would be a permanent thing built to cope with the dust of a stable/barn. If such a thing exists in my budget!
