Hi :)

New horsey arriving Saturday, he has no hard feed in the summer currently and he is a tad plump though this will soon change!

Owner has told me she feeds him a scoop of Farmway Cool Mix in the winter, now I have 2 problems, I don't know what cool mix is and I have tried googling the brand so I could look up ingredients but it won't come up (we do have a local farmways store but thought I would see if anyone here could enlighten me.

His feeds are included at my yard and I want to see if nut/chaff mix would likely suffice or any other options :)

Any help much appreciated :D Half drunk can of Diet Coke on offer :)

Cool mixes are generally fairly low digestible energy, low protein feeds with very low levels (or none) of cereals which are commonly thought of as being 'heating'. Spillers do a cool mix/slow response mix, and you can get own brand and budget versions.

Generally nutritionally they don't differ too much from a standard horse and pony cube/nut, but they are popular as they look and smell 'nice' (so people are more likely to buy them, even though the majority of horses couldn't care less).

Belgian warmbloods can be very good doers, mine managed to cope with moderate/hard work (team chasing or eventing every weekend) with no hard feed whatsoever. Just warning you! :p

If feed is included in your livery there is plenty of time to introduce any change before the winter, nuts and chaff will have much the same ingredients as a mix its just a different form and as long as he is happy eating nuts that should be fine.
Once you get to know him you can adjust his diet to suit his work and condition as required.

Thanks Rhino! I think you may be right as he is 'festively plump' at the moment but out on dairy farm grass so he may starve when he comes here! :D

I am not the type to feed for the sake of it but I am slightly OCD about planning ahead so that is great to know. He is no slimjim now so I am going to play it by ear and now I know that YO has feeds I can use if the need arises :)

It will be nice to have a good doer, the horse I have been loaning for the last 2 years needs 3 big feeds in winter
