Coolstance copra v equijewel

To achieve weight gain on an elderly pony prone to laminitis.
I'm thinking equijewel (rice bran) or coolstance copra. Equijewel claims to be low in starch but I read elsewhere that rice bran is high in starch.

She was on speedie beet, micronized linseed and hi fi molasses free. I've changed the hi fi to AlfaA oil but I'm not sure this enough of a change to get the results I want
 
I've heard great things about Copra. Unfortunately when I tried it I didn't find it worth the money at all. Didn't do a thing for my two.
Not tried the equijewel, but I do have a friend that uses it and her horse looks completely amazing which she puts down to, in part, the equijewel.
 
I have used Equijewel with great results. This is my TB when he was a bit skinnier, I found it hard to get weight on him...

This was him about 4 weeks ago. He is no longer ribby, his topline and hindquarters have picked up considerably...

My friend had a laminitis prone pony who also suffered with equine metabolic syndrome. As he got older he struggled to keep weight on. My friend fed him Chaff, SpeediBeet and Equijewel after experimenting a bit with his feed and once on the Equijewel he managed to maintain a good weight.
 
I tried equijewel for 35 year old, who had lami good few years back and am managing it with muzzle etc, I wasn't sure about it, his coat felt and looked lovely, but I wasnt' sure if it was that that made him bit psyco, although he thinks he's 3 anyway and it may have just been him.

I thought I'd give copra a go after hearing good things about it, and on reccommendation by my vet. Trouble with mine is that he's VERY fussy and anything different I introduce he thinks I am poisoning him !

I introduced it slowly over 2 weeks, I tried it - dry, just wetted, and soaked, he doesn't like it on its own, so I put it with spillers high fibre cubes which he was already on. He was eating it soaked like I'd wet feed in morning ready for the night and vice versa. He was eating it like this for a while then someone fed him for me but didn't give him the soaked feed I'd put ready and fed him another feed which I'd put ready but not soaked so it was dry as she'd only wetted it a little and it turned him right off, so I was back to square one, had to take him back to just a cup in each feed and am slowly increasing it. He's decided he doesn't like it soaked now, but just wetted with the cubes but I make sure I put enough water so its not dry as he eats down. It swells about 3 times its size, so my trouble is the amount really. He doesnt' like big meals and won't eat more than I'm giving him, I've tried giving an extra feed left in his stable overnight of just copra but he won't eat it/or doesnt' eat it all.

So if you don't have a fussy boy like me then you should be fine. I had worked him up to having 1kg a day which is the starting ration reccommended after introduction.

It smells lush like crushed bounty bars lol I'd eat it myself ha ha.

If you contact Stance Uk and speak to Piers he organised a sample for me as I explained to him how fussy my horse was. Think they are on facebook too, Stance Australia are.

I looked at Outshine too but went for the Copra and before that equijewel
 
Just a teeny taste for research purposes. :p

I always remember when I was a kid, finding a clear plastic bag of chocolate drops in the cupboard. I ate some, thought they were pretty horrible but chocolates chocolate isn't it...any will do in a pinch, ate some more... :D

Yep, doggie drops.
 
Thanks a mil for the replies. Naenae your horse looks great. Equijewel is easier for me to source and the old mare that needs it is so gentle I couldn't imagine her going psycho. So I might give that a try first. I was worried how it would affect the lami.

The coolstance might make me too hungry! Mmm I love bounty bars
 
If you give saracen a ring they are very helpful, and they'll send you a measuring mug and tell you how much you should be feeding
 
I use equi-jewel for mine. Very pleased with it and he's really filled out and rounded off whilst on it. I've had to cut it out for now as he was starting to look too well!
