Any thoughts on this coconut feed please. What does everyone use it for? Does it make them sharp? Is it only for weight gain? etc etc Any views really appreciated
thanks
I use it for weight gain and condition on my small section A, it doesn't make him fizzy and he is quite a lively pony by nature
I use it because so many other 'conventional' feeds make him itch
Its put a great deal of good condition on him but hasn't made him fat, his skin and coat are much improved
My tip would be to get hold of some and try your horse with it, I had to build up the amount that my pony was fed over time. he loves it now
I do feed it very wet, when just soaked normally its got a texture of wet sand and (probably very unfounded) I worry about colic so I add extra water and mix with a sugar/cereal free mix to bulk it out a bit and a balancer
I used it soaked for weight gain too. I mixed it with a fibre feed like Hi Fi lite otherwise it was like a slop. Horse had a lovely coat and gained condition when proprietary feeds hadn't worked. Agree with WelshD to introduce very slowly. It didn't make my horse fizzy.
I had an elderly TB, tried every food but ended up using as its cheap for the amount of calories you are giving. He was on two stubbs scoops a day dry wetted and mixed with a scoop of condition mix and it did the job but he never really liked it and would leave it given the chance. Its a lot cheaper than the rice bran alternatives and I never noticed any change him it temperament wise.
I have just got a sample by emailing them, and am introducing it at about a small spoonful soaked, he knows it's there, but most of the feed gone by the morning and will increase very slowly. Hoping it will keep weight on my atypical Connie who is a bit of a nightmare to keep weight on in the winter.
My Thoroughbred mare does really well on coolstance (we call it copra here). She is fed it over winter when we have little grass to keep some condition on her.
In saying that, my mare is not fussy at all. A friends horse would not eat it and found it easy to sift out and eat the food she preferred.
It has never affected her in terms of behaviour, it is considered a "cool" feed here. I would recommend giving it a go, can always change if you don't like it
Good for condition, safe for laminitics (assuming they're not fat), it is the marmite of horse feed, they either love it or hate it! Main reason I feed it is it's low in calcium compared to other conditioning feeds and as a lot of other barefoot folks I struggle with Ca/Mg/Phos ratios.
I think it is brilliant. My mare is very fussy and she loves it providing it is mixed with chaff so it isn't just slop. She eats up better than when on any other feed. My friend's horse wouldn't touch it though and she is a real eats anything type.
It has been brilliant for putting condition on my mare who is a poor doer. It gives her plenty of useable energy without hotting her up or making her stressy. I was able to stop feeding oats when I swapped speedibeet for copra.
A friend feeds it to her pony who has multiple allergies and intolerances too and it is working well for her too.
It's ideal for my PSSM horse and any horse than needs to gain weight without fizz. Introduce it slowly as it's a strong smell. My cob loves it now tho.
I use it at work on an elderly (30+) shetland who has cushings. We mix it with hi fibre cubes into a nice mush, add a bit of chaff and he loves it. He was skeletal earlier this year, we thought we would be putting him down this autumn but he's still here and has put a lot of weight on, he still looks like a very old pony but in much better condition than he was.
Does anyone know where I could get hold of some coolstance in Belgium?
Here I have drawn a blank, no one seems to have heard about it,does anyone know of a UK based shop who
is willing to send some over to Belgium?
I'll have a look on amazon, but they usually charge silly prices.
Any info will be most welcome!
Thank you.
