Well this certainly worked well this morning :D

The full article will hopefully be in the Guardian tomorrow . The Exmoor Rural Special mounted Constables was launched this wednesday and Trixie and I are amoung the first 5 on the beat :D

I am off to answer my own question in a minute, but is this a kind of "Village Bobby" but on horseback kind of thing? Excellent idea.

Excellent news.

We have some rather enthusiastic delivery drivers who are unfortunately typical white van man syndrome so it is great to make them more aware and considerate of other road users . Today we met quite a few and they had impeccable manners all of a sudden having steamed us off the road in the past few weeks on more than one occasion.

I hope to see more counties taking this scheme forwards.

Yes we are Volunteers and it's run by our local police officer . We are CRB'd, vetted and even have a utility belt with notebook and special pens oh and an ID badge.

"Lol mulledwine the thought briefly crossed my mind til I realised how much hassle I'd get for being in a 12.2 pony! "

Well I wear my gear on a 13.2 New Forest as well as on my 15hh Arab x Cob it works regardless :D

If you are on Exmoor or the other counties doing it you would need to contact the officer running the scheme. Anyone on Exmoor PM me and I can foward you detail to our tame police officer - he is looking to recruit another 25 people :D

I work for Hampshire police and im an equine liaison officer, I havn't heard of this.
What exactly are you doing on horse back? Id be interested to see if it's something we could do.

We hack out as per normal wearing our id badge and hi viz jacket and flourescent excersize sheet and utility belt and just again as per normal keep our eyes and ears open. In our area we have lots of speeding traffic through the village and anyone driving dangerously we take a note of the reg number in our nice book and report it to our beat officer who can follow it up and keep an eye out for the driver on his beat.

Also we have scrap dealers who circulate in the daytime looking for scrap metal then come back at night and help themselves to machinery etc. By being seen around in the daytime we hope it will deter them - we are aware of who they are through our neighbourhood watch scheme.

Also as we are in a beauty spot if we see a car parked with valuables on display we have a form to fill out for the driver and the police man to make them aware of the possible dangers to try and avoid a potential crime.

We don't have training as such just normal hacking but have been assessed by a RI to check we are safe and suitable. We are covered by the police insurance too.

I did think Hampshire already had this scheme as our officer said he had been there to find out more about the scheme.

That's a good idea, I can think of a few area's in Hampshire that this would really work in, especially around the New Forest as we have a lot of cars being broken into in the beauty spot car parks.
Il tell my boss about this tomorrow.

How absolutely, absolutely BRILLIANT!! :D

More incentive for me to get H hacking out on his own!

(LOVE the idea of the Shetland 'on patrol'!)

Where can I sign up, it will really get up the noses of the couple (two cars, they are always in the people carrier) that I regularly see blocking the bridleway at lunch times during the week. I am sure they are not there just for coffee!

I would love to do this (would make sure i had my contact lenses in lol). Do you know if it is running around the loxton/crooks peak area of north somerset ? We have loads of beauty spots around as loads of walks etc and also tonnes of nutters in cars. Happy to be vetted etc and would give me a reason to hack even more ! also take dog with me so he could be an honoury police dog ! (or nutter collie !)

Sounds great. Is this something that has been brought about following the marketing of the 'Polite' clothing and realisation that horseriders could be used as a visible deterent? I've been stopped a couple of times on my 16.2hh bay RID mare when wearing my Polite waistcoat by drivers asking for directions, after being mistaken for a 'Bobby'. Is it a pilot scheme in those areas mentioned ? Wonder if West Yorks Police would want a new recruit!

PS Is it a 5 stage vetting.................
