Has anyone who has managed and ridden a horse with COPD ever experienced behaviour problems?
I have managed my mares COPD for the past 4 years, it mainly showed as a cough and snorting a lump of mucus within 5 minutes of mounting after that absolutely fine.
Recently it has got worse with mor coughing but a dryer rather than snotty cough.
It got me thinking - she has always had erratic episodes, like about after 30 mins of schooling nicely suddenly put her head down and jack it in, if driven forwards wouls rear and nap but if left to settle and then asked to go forward she'd be ok.
Or out on a hack she'd spook at a leaf and really get in a tizz, almost panicky, till let calm down.
Could this slightly odd behaviour be linked to the COPD at all?

Interesting. Ive had spooky and reactive horses before but they havent got into a shaky jelly tense ridiculous state like this one does. And shes a nice natured placid ID x 99% of the time but has these sudden unpredictable moments.

I have asthma and know that I panic if I think that I cannot breathe.
This absolutely. The last time I had a full on asthma attack, even though I knew what was happening, and why it happened the sensation of not being able to get enough air is absolutely claustrophobic, and there isn’t anything you can do until the medication kicks in
