Hi everyone I hope am posting correctly in right place etc. Basically have been combing this forum for a while now and have gotten several good tips that have helped my girl to make it this far, we are nearly at end of road she just had her second steroid injection in 3 days and is prone to laminitis its a matter of her being able to breathe and everything else comes 2nd and will deal with it as it arises now, so, long story short instead of being a maudlin mess I thought it was time to give back to the various people who have helped me to help her and share anything I have found useful that I did not look up here (ie have been using http://www.equinatural.co.uk/BreathePlus which several people reccomended, it helped me keep her away from steroids for 18 months and the lady who makes and sells it is a really lovely person, spoke to her on phone and she really is a good person). Also I raided this forum for advice and now have my own home made hay steamer made from water butt and several large flasks (no electric)

Evohaler - the first time I tried it as advised, side one, headcollar etc, well she has a thing about being trapped or held like that and the teeth marks are a permanent reminder of that attempt. What worked for me as I really wanted to make it an everyday part of my routine with least amount of hassle was a small squeeze of http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/dermoline-soothing-throat-syrup-250gm.html (have just picked random places to just show product I am talking about, I always shop around for price) then I chew up a couple of sugar free mints, kind of like a little horsy rocky road in my hand, she then comes forward (no headcollar involved) sticks hor nose between my cleavage hand held just under for her to lick and i turn in to cover the nostril not sucking in the good stuff, can hear her snorting it in ever since she realised it helps her has got easier and easier my mother has worked with horses all her born natural and she swore I'd never get it near her face, patience and determination won out.

Last winter, and this one, using the throat syrup above, what I did was save all my old tubes then when the harsh cold air came in then took small flask down to field and filled small bowl with hot water, cut tube up and soaked to make warm hopefully nose clearing water for her feed (happy hoof) - or just a teaspoon in hot water if no old tubes left. I also squeezed small amount on her apple slices and put ventipulmin on top of that before mixing.

Local honey - 3 days ago was first steroid injection for 18 mnths and considering the pollen this summer I put it down to a dab of local honey from 2 miles down the road morning and night, its only thing have changed since previous spring, have now stopped it as obviously sugar/steroids etc atm. Was harsh her coming down hard and fast after such a good summer but it is what it is.

Just a few little things which most people probably aware of but wanted to share if it can help anyone elses baby. Thanks to all the good people on this forum for sharing advice on all the different subjects its been a god send to us, appreciate it.

I don't recall your other posts but I am so sorry you feel it is near the end for your girl. I lost my horse of a lifetime just over two weeks ago, after a long battle with laminitis, so I know how emotionally exhausting it is. Thanks for listing out the things that you have found useful in your battle with COPD. I hope that it doesn't prove to be the end you fear.

Hi, thank you, sorry am not very good at explaining myself at best of times I have searched through as a guest viewer to see what others recommend by word of mouth etc, never logged on and posted before but felt selfish and wanted to share what worked for me, try and do something useful in the face of adversity.

Thank you for your good wishes and I am so very sorry for your loss. I know what you mean by horse of a lifetime - love them all but this one I have now has made me a better person and never say never and all that but had long chat with vet today after watching her struggle myself for last few days so am geared up to be strong and do right thing, which doesn't mean I'll ever give up trying but we'll see. Thank you again and am sorry you lost the battle.

Just seen your post. There was very good results for the COPD in the Feeding section about a product called Pulmon Ez. Look it up its worth a try to sort your girl out. Good luck

I have a chronic laminitic with COPD - here are some thoughts

Get tested for PPID, if marginal start Prascend.

His COPD is 1000% times better - we were nebulising (that's with a pump and ventolin in solution form using an equihaler mask) 3 times a day at one point.

Now it is manageable using Clenil Modulate, but generally he does not need it.

An AeroMask is best (the £300 option!) - it's not the cheapest but it is in the long run becuase the medicines are effective and are not wasted.

Vets know very little about RAO/COPD. They are kind of lost wiht it - if ventipulmin and steroids don;t work they are lost. Usually they do not understand the medication options available. My vet did not even know about the nebulising and ventolin nebules options.

So keep things dust free, steam hay, think about an AeroMask and get the PPID checked.

The day before we started Prascend we nebulised twice - we nebulised once in the week following and then we have not needed to nebulise again. A most unexpected side effect, but it seems that PPID really knocks back the immune system.
