My horse has been formally diagnosed with COPD today and I've been told she needs her hay soaking, dust free bedding and 10 puffs of an inhailer twice a day. I'm a full time university student and can't put her on loan as she has other health issues at the moment and can't be ridden for a while. This is a lot to ask, I was just wondering if anyone else has this and can help with anything that might cut time down. Oh I've been told I can't put her on haylage because she's a cob and it's too fatty for her, thanks x

my welsh section c has copd diagnosed 2/3 years ago she was horrific the first year inhalers were out of the questions so she had 100 steroid tablets a day for 4 months then we slowly worked our way off them i try and keep her out as much as possible she has global herbs airways (?) and turmeric in her feed, when she is in she has only rubber mats in her very well ventilated stable and haylage to eat and touch wood not had a bad attack again so there is light at the end of the tunnel

just a quick edit to say she can't tolerate hay at all even if its soaked she will cough, being a welsh cob she is very far away from being a skinny mini lol defiantly on the chunky side

Yeah mine is a Welsh section D so again never going to be slim! Aha at the yard I am at now there isn't an option for her to live out.

Do the herbs and that work in the feed?

I mean I know the vet has said the inhailer is what she needs but she's not puffing all the time she just has bad days, but not that often

Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. It seems to depend on the case. I've tried a few and found that one that was highly recommended by a number of people didn't help, while one I've heard doesn't work for others does help day to day.
