It's been a hell of a two years, coughing, then heaving, then nearly six weeks ago a collapse. Vet threw everything at Shy, it was a horrible, I thought I would lose him, and if not, he'd not have any quality of life ?.

I'm an aromatherapist, and did some research. I came up with a formula of veg oil, garlic and eucalyptus oils. I know the controversy around garlic, a very little goes a long way. And you know what? He's not coughed or heaved for five weeks, and I'm riding again !

WITH A DISCLAIMER... 2 litres veg oil, 40 drops eucalyptus essential oil, 25 drops of garlic essential oil. It stinks ! 10 ml in each feed. received_260557242903523.jpeg

I started mine on garlic after reading this, she's coping with pollen far better than last year. (She's also noticeably less covered in flies than the others, although I'm still fly spraying her as well. )

That’s really interesting as I have one who coughs from the tree pollen. He was fine until about two days ago so I’m going to try your concoction as the forecast is high over the next few days. Can is ask where you get you essential oils? Would somewhere like Holland and Barrett have them?

Fantastic result!! Are you feeding 10ml once or twice a day? Just wondering if something about using essential oils (garlic in particular) is 'bettter/more bioavailable' than in feed...

Palo1, essential oils are much more powerful than the garlic feed supplement stuff you can get, which is why you have to be very careful (garlic can cause aenemia, but I had no choice but to give it a go). He has the mixture 10mls twice daily. I hope that helps x

Thank you; yes I was aware of the anaemia link and if I have ever fed garlic it is usually for a period of time and with some caution. It can be so helpful though!! I was interested to hear more about the essential oils potency so thank you. :)

ETA - Well done btw and your vet must be delighted too :)

We had one blip a few days ago, Shy was in the stable overnight, due to the weather. It was heave ho in the morning ? Two scoops of Ventipulmin and back out in the field, right as rain. Went straight back on the oils, and nothing since, even been riding! He's usually fine on his oils in the stable ?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️

I have been using the oil concoction for a while, since I noticed a slight heaves line. Rigs had an odd cough last week, so also had anti histamines.

But, today he had a proper coughing fit, asthma, so is back on Ventipiulmin.

The concoction didn't work for him, but I am glad it has helped others.

Had to have a vet visit, and full steroid treatment. Coughing, heaving, distended nostrils at rest...... Ventipulmin doesn't work for him, and the hot humid weather plays havoc with his breathing. Poor lad. Fingers crosses we don't get laminitis now.

Much improved today, thank goodness. I wonder if there are different factors involved in that your horse responds well to Ventipulmin and mine does not? Your magic mix was good at stopping the cough and wheeze that is usually present, but once the temperature started to soar he was very quickly in trouble. Hope Shy is faring better.
