As post says. Ladies, how do you cope when it being your time of the month when riding and do horses etc? Can you offer any advice for riding especially as I seem to get in a mess (if you see what I am getting at) and apologising for any embrassment caused by this post. Just need help!

I don't really have much of a problem i'm afraid, but I do tend to avoid beige/cream/white jods, just in case. I keep plenty of 'supplies' at the yard for emergencies.

I find the exercise helps with the cramps, but if I'm feeling particularly bad or worried, I lunge instead of riding - that way I can wear more comfortable, looser clothing and there's no worries.

Hope that helps

I can so relate to this post. Not only with pain but the other more embarrassing symptoms.Try not to hack out for few days as I can get caught out.I also use endless precautions and a drug that relieves symptoms of heaviness and pain.

i used to have a problem with really heavy periods, and hated competing at that time of the month. The times when it was unavoidable I'd wear my normal underwear with a sanitary towell plus a tampon, and an extra pair of underwear. Not very comfortable, but it kept any mess, and possible embarressments at bay.

I cope absolutely fine, although my periods arent really a problem anyway.

Always use tampons and never towels (feel like I'm wearing a nappy!) and wear darker jods/jeans just in case!

When I worked with the horses, I use to really suffer, and often had to call my mum up with extra supplies, as I'd run out!!
I never rode, mainly due to mess than pain!!
I eventually went to Docs and went on the pill, and porblem solved!!
Now I can get away with the extra thin liners, and normally never even think about it when I ride now!! Some times months can be bad, but NEVER as bad as they use to be!!

Keep away from heavy work, lifting etc, as this uses your stomach muscles. Avoiding riding if you can, but if you can't, wear dark jods, sensible pants and be prepared!!

Pills not a option when your 47.Poor 15 yr old daughter is suffering same problems plus we have moody mare what a combination

Oh! I quite like it at that time, sometimes a bit tired/less able to cope with surprises but lots of extra padding on the delicate bits! In fact I occasionally used to use a pad at other times on a particularly nasty RS saddle when my dressage nicks were in the wash!

I use pads with wings and sometimes splash out (no pun intended!) on the ultra thin ones so I can wear them to ballet too and yes, that does mean pale pink tights even for grown-ups! Not had a problem in the last (OMG I just counted!) 20 years of classes...

Don't find the internal things comfy & they are a bit drying.

Does anyone else get a bit nervous in the run up.....I find that riding in the dark after work on a cold, windy winters night in the outdoor menage always makes me a little jumpy.

I thought it was just me but my closest riding buddy is exactly the same.

I'm not a windy rider at all but just get a little more jittery and she kindly replies by sensing it and being a bit more spooky lol.

Almost a relief when it starts lol

I agree with the mooncup option. They take a bit of getting used to (but then didn't tampons when you first used them)

Honestly once you have got used to it they are an absolute revelation!
I have never had a leak with mine and I used them when riding I even ran the London Marathon with it in. I have a very heavy flow as well.
Certainly not as much hassle as tampons. When out and about just pop into loo, remove it, empty it, give it a wipe around with some tissue, pop back in again.....Seeemples
When I'm at home I give it a proper rinse out.

Never caught out with not having any tampons in the house and it has paid for itself about 100 times over now......more money to put towards rugs!

Know what you mean. Mine have always been irregular, never know when I'm going to have one, and have been caught out.

But on the plus side, have gone six months without having one. But when I do have them, they can last over a week.

I'm really lucky as i dont have TOTM any more, oh the advantages of having a female doctor that was horsey, totally understood. She suggested as i was having problems with my old pill to try a new lower does one that would be suitable to take continuously and stop my periods all together, been two years now and havent looked back. Makes life so much easier, can ride when ever i want, without worrying about what clothes i wear and not a problem being round the horses anymore as thier not picking up on it.

Saw the mooncup things before, are they not more hassle than tampons?

Definitely not! You can't forget to take it with you as you keep it in for the whole of your period (other than when you are emptying/washing it) I get no leaks at all and can forget I am wearing it which I never could with tampons. It holds more than a tampon so needs changing less often, you can put it in when you think you are due so no worries about coming on at an awkward time. I spend no money at all on Tampons now, just use this with a thin liner. It feels much cleaner as there are not fibres left inside you. After my period I put it in a small pot of Milton sterilising fluid until the next time. Putting it in takes a little practice but there is no way I would ever go back.

Another vote for the Mooncup, had one of these for years and before that a Keeper (which is made of rubber).

My challenge each month (apologies if TMI) is to not let a drop of fluid escape, so when I start to feel that slightly crampy ooh it's my period feeling, in the mooncup goes.

I tend to empty mine every morning (must have light flow and/or I'm lazy) and rinse it out when I'm in the shower before popping it back in.

I'm a lurker but had to post to say how brilliant the mooncup is. I only wish I'd known about it years ago.

I bung mine in when I'm due on, empty it when I get up and again when I go to bed. No mess, no fuss, no horrid dry feeling at the end. It's money saving, brilliant for holidays/camping/travelling/festivals, there's no need to carry round loads of pads/tampons and it's better for the environment. I can honestly say it's changed my life!

For me, Mirena coil = no periods for 5 whole years! Yaaayyy!!!

Depo provera, the implant and taking the combined pill without a break all have the same effect and may be suitable but the lower level of hormones in the mirena are better for me. I believe that they are suitable for lots of people who can't go on the pill too.

Glad it's not just me then, as I am nearing menopause my nice regular, light periods have been replaced by haphazard and extremely painful and heavy ones which have meant there have been days where I daren't ride for fear of leakage

Never heard of a mooncup, sounds brilliant. Bit gross I know but is there no risk of 'losing it' inside. I generally stick to a heavy duty pad and extra big knickers which make me feel a bit safer but wouldn't want to be too far from a loo.

Sorry to add to the mooncup discussion with bad news here, but myself and two of my female housemates all tried them, couldnt get them to sit properly and found them really uncomfortable! And yes, we did persevere!

But Im sure its like with tampons, works for some, not for others! xxxxx

Flamehead, I was just wondering if you had cut the 'stalk' bit off the mooncup? You don't really need it once you've got the hang of it and maybe without it you wouldn't feel the need to push it up so far (it is supposed to sit much lower than a tampon) therefore finding it more comfy?
I've found it brilliant for riding, I really do forget it is there. I hated using tampons because I could never seem to get the string in a comfortable position and would get sore. You can't exactly rummage about adjusting things once you are on the horse!

Another vote for mooncup - they're so unobtrusive that I often forget mine's there, and as someone said you don't have to worry about carrying 'supplies' with you. You save so much money too and we're all keen on that! I also think my cramps are better with it - don't know why but I'm happy.
I do get the odd small leak if I've been careless putting it in but I wear black underwear

and you can use a thin liner as well if you're worried. I find it much less gross than the alternatives tbh and they are better for the environment too so you can feel smug about that as well...

Hiya,

Ye I cut the whole stalk off basically! But could still feel it, not when stood up but when sat down and bending and things (Sorry, far too much information!!!!!). Just couldnt get it to sit right, and neither could any of my friends.

Maybe I'll give it another try next month lol! xxxx
