Copper deficiency?

My mare's coat is growing back very poorly from her clip. She has very thin and weak-looking bleached hairs across her body. These hairs are straight, they stand straight up in the wind, so not fish hook hairs and they are also dull looking although the rest of her coat is shiny and her skin good quality. No other horse in her field has these hairs. Does this sound like a copper deficiency and, if yes, could people recommend a supplement for it? Can you test for mineral deficiencies? She was on a ForagePlus hoof and skin balancer until recently but the poor quality hairs were growing even then.

Thank you, I think you're right. We've been under-rugging her to help with weight loss so that seems likely. I don't know why I thought cat hairs only appear under the jawline.

I agree with this I have a bay gelding and he is classed as a wild bay so has white hair through his whole body, so he grows what I call his beard coat but he gets it mainly on his belly chest and legs.

What I will say though it can be linked to cushings Louis coat definitely got worse as he got older his 19 now and has very mild cushings.

I would definitely look into this if she is older horse.

If the coat underneath seems normal, then these longer hairs definitely sound like cat hairs.
