copper roller on strong horse?

horse goes well in a pelham out hacking, is very strong & likes to put head down & take off long & low.

looking to slowly come off the pelham, would a copper roller be any good as horse leans & takes hold?
 
the rollers will stop the horse leaning on your hands but to be honest a horse that still pulls in a pelham isn't likely to listen to a bit with rollers unless you put in alot of schooling first in a safer environment.
 
sorry i did not word it well, he doesn't do it in the pelham, he behaves & does not take off.
he is schooled in a snaffle but if i hack out in the snaffle he takes off.
i don't really mind hacking in the pelham but will be doing a lot of sj/x/c this summer & dont want to be fussing with double reins, & i don't like roundings

it could be worth a try but how about a compromise such as a hanging cheek snaffle which gives a small amount of poll pressure or better still a gag which means you can adjust the level of brakes without having to put a different bit in.

tried a dutch gag but he still did not stop, have thought about a hanging snaffle,not tried one yet

Worth a try, a copper roller isn't that strong so you might need another in between bit. If you are buying one I would get one with cheeks.
 
If a dutch gag didn't stop him I would be surprised if a hanging cheek or a copper roller will. Why do you want to change from a pelham if you know he goes well in it?
 
as i said, i do not want to sj or x/c with double reins & i do not like roundings, therefore i need to find a bit he goes well in without the need for double reins.

if i have no choice then i will carry on using the pelham but would like to try something else as well

I have a D ring copper snaffle and I find my horse goes well in it. It took a while for him to take to it, but coming from a gag that didnt suprise me!
 
was he strong out riding?

thats the problem.i can school in a field in a snaffle but out hacking he just wants to go fast

If not a cheltenham gag, my horse was quite similar to your description, except he would not jump well in a pelham at all as it was too strong, so now use cheltenham gag at all times apart from schooling and he is great!
