Copra

brilliant stuff. makes them fat and shiny and you dont need to feed loads. need to introduce slowly . some of mine wont eat it and the rest love it.

Ok, he is 21 and I was thinking about what to feed in winter. I know people say that heavies can do it without, but a horse is designed to eat for around 18 hours a day, right? So winter, grass is going or at least has no nutrietion and I want to get his supps into him, so I was thinking about handful of chaff, glucosomine, cider vinegar and some kind of veteran nut.
Someone then said to me that it is good for conditioning, tastes good so encourages them to eat an otherwise boring chaff.
I am now rather confused!
Last year I gave him a handful of chaff, scoop of baileys nuts, sorry half a scoop and half a scoop of sugar beet. (they live out 24 hours even in winter)
Also they have adlib hay in winter or haylage.

technically copra is protein extracted coconut pulp, and has quite a lot of fat - but in reality extracting the protein destroys the fats so it's fat content isnt as high as you might think - that said it is still a very conditioning feed for horses who naturally make the most of the fats and oils in the diet, unlike cows which don't!

right ok, the fat thing worries me as he has had liver probs.
so i have to avoid protein and oils.
so what can I give him to keep him happy over winter?
He is retired, so not in work, just in the field and I walk him out but that is it.
It is more for warmth and comfort over winter

Well to be honest MC until you mentioned it I'd never heard of it but googled it and I think for something you have not used before read this

http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/archives/2007/05/176.shtml

As it says there's no proof but I wouldn't like to take the risk when there are plenty of other things that can give what this does for oils and proteins.
