I've been feeding corn oil for a number of weeks now, but the price has shot up, so I am wondered what the difference is between that and veggie oil for feeding? On corn oil he has a lovely coat and picked up weight wise - so don't want to risk loosing what we've achived so far. Opinions please....

Thanks!

Why dont you feed soya oil instead its much cheaper and helps them put weight on and gives a really lovely coat i thinks its 80p for a ltr at tescos x.

I've done a lot of research on this recently and the results I came up with surprised me. I had always fed soya oil to my horse but someone suggested veg oil as cheaper alternative.

Looking at all of these they all seem to come from GM products and their quality isn't consistent.

I'v found that Simple systems feed do pre prepared linseed thats gaurenteed and works out alot cheaper than soya etc

Depends what you are feeding it for and how much!

If you are feeding at high volume, like the EPSM diet, corn oil is worth the extra because horses find it more palitable than any other sort. Chances are that at high volume the horse will turn its nose up at veggie oil.

If you are just feeding a glurp for coat and condition then I don't see it would make any difference.

Check the bottle to ensure that it is non hydrogenated or your horse will be violently ill in a very messy way.

The only oil to avoid long term at high volume is linseed oil as this irritates the gut and can cause colic.

Keep an eye on the total amount of oil in your horses total feed. If you are feeding more than 250ml or 1/4lb of oil/fat per day, you will need te ensure the horse is getting all the selenum it needs. ome high oil feeds suplement the correct quantity of selenium, some don't.

I am no expert in these things, but I looked into oil as I always buy those large bottles from the supermarket, either sunflower or vegetable, but read somewhere that sunflower was better to feed as vegetable oil has varying quantities of different ingredients....

I posted recently about soya oil and Silver_Florin was very knowledgeable and wrote "Hi, we have an ex-show jumper with epsm. Soya oil is recommended for his condition, shivers, stringhalt etc also for competition horses. They burn the energy from the oil which prevents muscle damage. It is great for all horses. You have it exactly right. They can get overweight but if in a lot of work it normally balances out. We use it on all our horses in work." I have to say that I have noticed a real difference performance wise with relation to energy etc and coat condition. Thoroughly reccommend it.
