Vet has advised corn oil for my veteran horse who has drastically lost weight after a colic episode. Can I just pick up cooking corn oil from the shops or does it have to be specialist ‘horse’ corn oil? Well aware aware they are probably the same thing but the horse version will be 10 times more expensive!!!! Just checking I’m not wrong though and normal cooking corn oil actually isn’t safe for horses? Thanks

Yes you can use supermarket oil but the cheap stuff is rapeseed or sunflower and both are fine. Spiller recommends adding 1000iu natural vitamin E for every 100ml of supermarket oil you feed to compensate for the oxidative nature of vegetable oil.

One of mine is fed 400ml off rapeseed oil a day.
