I feed my horse from the floor mainly because she's good with her hay and doesn't trash it but I am now looking for a solution for my mini shetlands. They share a stable - their own choice - and I am thinking ahead to winter and how best to feed hay in the stable. As they are so tiny I will only be feeding small quantities on the nights when we have howling gales. We are on top of a big hill and very exposed so all my horses have to come in sometimes.
I will try feeding using several small piles of hay on the floor but I have a sneaking suspicion that they will trample their hay into their bedding so am looking for another solution in case it's needed. I will obviously need two 'feeding stations' and wondered about small corner feeders if I remove the existing manager in one corner as they can't possibly reach up to that but I don't want anything too deep or that they could get a leg/hoof hooked over. I have looked at hay bags and wonder if you can hang them low to the ground and if they'd be safe? Any advice please?
