Trying to find a more affordable alternative to the Cornucrescine feed supplement and wondered what you guys had tried with success.

I've requested an information pack from Formula4feet so will compare ingredients, rations etc. when that arrives.

I've looked at Farrier's Formula but that works out more expensive.

Are there any others that come in 10+kg sacks? Feeding to a 17 & 17.1hh sure does make that stuff disappear quickly!

Do you specifically want a pellet style hoof balancer? If your open to powder I'd highly recommend pro hoof by progressive earth on eBay. Fantastic hoof supplement. The larger the bag you buy the more cost effective, but they also do pro balance which works just as well for most horses and is about half the price of pro hoof.

This is the only stuff worth buying. Superb results that last.

Oh thank you both! Pro Hoof looks very promising.

They recommend a daily horse dose at 1 scoop 75ml/58g, would it be a scoop and a half for the big boys? AA I know Alice and Ted are of larger stature (!), do you give them more than 1 scoop?

My girl is a mere 14hh :-) and she gets the pony scoop. 2 16.3hh on the yard I was on and still very good friends with the yo so still go down and upto date with the horses are on the 1 full scoop. Both horses feet have improved on 1 scoop farrier has seen results so it seems to be working for them at that height.

Ted and Alice have nothing other than haylage and have perfect rock crunching feet, both hacking out barefoot and I am so hoping they stay that way.

I use it on my retired show hunter whose feet were shocking throughout his career despite being fed and kept like royalty. Someone on here recommended Pro Hoof to me and I just wish I had found it years ago. He did 6 weeks on a scoop and a half and then one scoop daily, he is 17.2 and around 725kg. His feet improved so much he did the occasional hack last summer.

Obviously it takes time to improve foot quality but I would certainly recommend Pro hoof for any horse with or without problems.

If pennies are tight you can feed pro balance which works out about £10 a month for a 500kg horse. Even if you have current hoof issues, you might find the Pro Balance helps enough that you can change to pro mineral at some point in the future :)

Thanks for the replies all and for the explanation AA. Thankfully it's just for maintenance rather than repair.

Thanks FC, I'll take a look at the Pro Balance.
