coronary band dystrophy help

Hi, My Section D has just been diagnosed with Coronary band dystrophy, it is being treated by the vet with topical steroids and flamazine. Bloods have been taken for insulin levels, and cushings. Insulin levels to reflect if it is safe for him to have oral steroids. Feather has been cut back over the band, and am keeping the areas dry. It is apparently more prevalent in the heavier breeds. If anyone has any advice or information I would be very grateful. Thankyou

Hi there , my mare was diagnosed with this last year, she had deep central sulcus thrush in her feet from the day I bought her and I just couldn’t get rid of it no matter what I did . I used all of the vet prescribed sprays and Red Horse field paste and hoof stuff and they made no difference at all . Her feet were long and her frogs would over grow and bleed when the farrier trimmed them back. Her feet often smelled bad too and the farrier had mentioned canker ( but told me not to Google it ) She was very sore and fed up with me messing with her feet and sometimes I think she was footsore when I rode her too. She is a big built Irish draft type mare and was already being treated for EMS when her hooves started to deteriorate and liquid began seeping out of her coronary bands. We called the vet who diagnosed Coronary Band dystrophy and I was really really upset . I read some awful case histories on line and honestly was in despair … however we started with basics .. my farrier addressed the foot balance and my vet prescribed a simple topical hoof paste with copper sulphate for when the frogs were inflamed and flamazine for the flaky coronary bands and we got the EMS under control with diet and exercise ..

We are 10 months on now and her feet are much much better … they aren’t perfect but we haven’t had any recent flare ups …. fingers crossed for her going forwards and for yours too .
