About 6/7 months ago Stan came in from the field with a small injury to coronet band, bit of blood, not lame not big deal.

Since then I've been watching the 1.5 inch long horizontal crack in his hoof grow down, again no issue

it's now about 1 inch above the floor, clearly quite deep and I'm wondering what I can do to help - if anything. I'm worries a 1.5 inch by 1 inch lump of hoof will come away, as the crack is getting wider now it's got right down the foot, and he'll be really sore.

Any suggestions? tips or just wait and see.

I'm not sure there is much you can do other than wait and see. The farrier might have some sort of casting material to help if you do run into problems.

It's been fascinating watching my mates foot. She burst an abcess from the coronet band (not that she was ever lame), which has left a good 2cm horizontal hole in the hoof wall. Over time it has grown down and is now at ground level. It hasn't caused a problem, not even slight split thankfully. Next shoeing it should be pretty much gone.

thanks ihatework, it hasn't got any wider all the time it's been growing down, his feet are great currently it's just be such a shame if he was sore now.
Fingers crossed it's more surface than it looks.

It will be absolutely fine. Whilst you see a big hole on the outside, you're not seeing all the support growth that's been going on within the capsule wall.

Yep, you might have a big chunk fall out - but an inch long bit of hoof wall is NOT what supports the hoof - although knickers get routinely twisted at the mere thought of such an event. If that was hurting him, he'd have let you know at some point during the last 7 months.

Repeat after me, "it's fine, it's fine, it's fine".

Thanks, this is the offending hole, he is and has always been sound

Oh yes, that's no bother at all - purely cosmetic! :) Look at the healthy growth coming down above it! Yes, you'll have a chunk missing around the bottom and if you've got a rasp you can very gently round it off so that there are no sharp edges to chip - not really any different than you'd do with a chipped nail on your own hands.
