Not the first post about my new horse that I was anticipating
Would you dress this injury or leave open to air? Iām thinking Iād prefer to dress it (and did so last night). YO reckons might be better to leave to air but mare is turned out and the fieldās muddy (in August! Grr).
Itās an awkward spot and means Iām wrapping the hoof to keep the dressing on.
If Iām going to continue dressing it Iāll need to go get some more supplies - i was thinking a dressing, then a sock to hold in place and prevent rubs, then maybe one of those woofwear poultice boots to save messing about with vetwrap and duct tape. I cleaned with saline and put some wound cream (all I had to hand) last night; Iāve got some Manuka honey here Iād probably go for if Iām going to dress it again.
She was a bit of a pain to handle last night, sheās pair bonded with the mare sheās out with - sheās still at the yard I bought her from, on livery there until I can move her to one closer to home next week. Other mare was also on the yard having physio but they were both just desperate to be in each others line of sight.
Sheās unshod at the moment and her feet are in a bit of a state (getting trimmed and measured for boots asap - IF I can get a boot on, with this cut, that is!), sheās footy on the hardcore yard surface and has an aversion to standing on the rubber matting by the tie up points
so getting her to hold the foot up for long enough to vetwrap etc. was a bit of a struggle, combined with fretting about her āgirlfriendā!
So yes it would be easier to leave it, but Iām worried about mud/flies/infection risk. Would some silver spray or something like that do the trick?
Anyway - I promise photos of actual horse when I get round to it
