Coronet fungus?

Hello everybody and welcome to this round of, "WTF does my horse have now."

I think it's fungus on the coronet band. It's humid here. We've also had some rain. I was also a bad owner and turned my horse out with flyboots on after hosing him and his legs weren't dry. So many people get away with that though.

So I discovered some sores on my horse's heels and his hooves being essentially eaten away at the coronet band. There's one hoof that seems unaffected, and another that's very mild, then 2 (one front and one hind) that seem to be the worst.

So I'm scrubbing with hibiscrub, letting him dry infront of a fan, and applying antifungal. Things seem to be staying the same and not worsening. I will call my vet on Monday though.

Has anyone seen this before?

I really don't think it's metabolic, laminitis, or nutrition related. Not rat related either. Apparently that can be a thing. Horse seems completely unphased and sound.

Edited to add: the band is pink from hibisclens.

Is there a rat/vermin problem at the yard?

Just seen the rat part sorry.

No.

The yard is very clean, I've not seen any rats, and can't see true chewing/teeth marks. Even in his field I've not seen anything. The property seems well managed by hawks, cats and...snakes. I've seen the occasional rat snake, but none really stick around and they're harmless.

We do have morning dew (out at night), so that does not help, I'm sure.

His stable is clean and dry.

I started catastrophising and thinking his hooves are sloughing off, this is must be some band dystrophy thing, and surely this is the end/a $20,000 vet bill, but when I thought a bit more logically, it's giving me a fungal feeling.

Vetericyn is recommended but mine was caused by morning dew consistently. Never got this in the dead of winter when his feet were soaking, only summer.

I'll probably pick up some vetericyn today. I think I ran out and/or lost what I had.

He didn't get this last summer or any summer living out. He's had very mild thrush or scratches once or twice, but I think the fly boots exacerbated the issue.

It's way too fungus friendly here! He's gotten ringworm, I've gotten ringworm, my dog had some funk, I've had 2 other fungal rashes and my husband has had one 🙄 we are outside a lot and it's almost always quite humid and hot.

To be honest its not major its like our cuticles, so unless there is detachment it is just a thrushy type thing. I blame the mushrooms in my field, there are all different types . Iodine can be used on it as well

I'm thinking it looks more dramatic than it is, but it's a hoof issue so I want to stay on top of it. I do have some iodine.

I imagine the hoof will grow out a little funky or with a scar of sorts, but his hooves grow fast (annoyingly so), so I'm not too worried. My last horse grew out a gnarly coronet band injury before. Looked ugly, but seemed to not have any major impact.

It does look dramatic, and quite like something biting at it but it probably will disappear soon 🤣 nearly autumn
