Okay, so I'm hoping to compete at local shows this season but haven't competed in over 10 years! I know I need white or cream jods, long black boots or short boots with gaiters. Also I'm aiming for a Navy jacket just in case I fancy doing a bit of showing! So I'm stumped with the shirt, tie, stock situation. I see so many people now riding in collarless shirts and no stock, is this the norm? Do you wear a stock or shirt and tie? Let me know your input/opinions and also pictures would be very helpful!

I go with long black boots (boots and gaiters is just as correct), creamy/beige jods, blue jacket with a white stock shirt and white stock. If you are going unaff then quite alot of people round here do 'dress down' but I do prefer to dress up for outings! No pics I'm afraid though.

Hiya,

I don't think it matters too much at local level really, but I wear cream jods, white shirt and gold spotted tie, black jacket, long black leather boots and a hat with a black silk. I think short sleve shirts are allowed but you must have your jacket on over the top. My riding clud doesn't let people compete without jackets in the summer unless they have long sleeves on. If you wear a stock then it would be a collarless shirt, but no, I wouldn't wear one without one!

Sorry if that's no use as I'm not overly sure on the rules myself!

I hope you have lots of fun this season though, and well done for getting back out there!

You can, within reason, wear anything you want unaffiliated showjumping.

BUT for showing 99% of classes you will need a tweed jacket, not a navy one, so you might want to investigate this first. Apologies if you've already researched and know you need a navy one, but it's a common mistake.

For showjumping I wear a navy velvet helmet, cream stock shirt, navy jacket, cream jods and black long boots. My little sister wears a black GPA hat, white stock shirt, grey jacket, white jods and black long boots.

Again would only be low level showing, but I haven't investigated fully I was just told NEVER wear black for showing but navy is classed as acceptable. Thanks for the advice :)

m&m, hunters, ex racehorses, arabs

I wear white or cream jods, black long boots, white collarless shirt with stock and a black jacket. I opt for a stock as I do the hunter classes and understand the stock is prefered for those, as I can wear it to jump it saves me messing about with changes as the classes are always so close together and allows me to focus on the changes to Beau's tack that I need to make and my 2nd horse.

I have seen all sorts but most shows won't let you jump without jacket unless it's very hot and then you must have a proper shirt on underneath. I have seen a girl jump in blue jods, t shirt and borrowed jacket as rider lost nerve and wanted horse to do the course but she may have been NC.

Good luck and enjoy!!!!

Not quite. Navy for hacks and show ponies. Tweed for everything else (including riding horses).

Tbh OP tweed is the most flexible jacket. You can wear it in showjumping, dressage, eventing, the vast majority of showing classes (though at local level the judges won't be that pedantic). Despite what I just said about my sister, she often ends up showjumping in her showing gear (brown velvet helmet, yellow shirt, brown toned tie, brown tweed, yellow jods, black long boots) at local shows because she's nipping between showing and jumping classes.

The fun thing about showjumping is you have the ability to be entirely your own taste. I got a lovely blue silk stock for my birthday and I think I'm going to wear it from now on at unaffiliated SJ because I like it, even though stocks are very rarely seen. As long as you wear a jacket, light coloured breeches and some form of shirt, you'll be fine :)

Oh, and between us my sister and I have done jodphur boots + clips, jodphur boots and chaps, jodphur boots and gaiters and long boots at unaffiliated showjumping and never had any adverse comments.

Have fun shopping!

you can wear tweed for show jumping as well

But then you will be viewed as an "eventer" & the show jumpers will pour scorn upon you. Navy jacket is fine with cream or white jods, stock shirt with collar is more usual for sj than a stock, again the sign of being an "eventer" Good luck & have fun

As an eventer - entirely happy to be poured scorn on. It is also noticeable that the lowly eventers nearly always look considerably smarter than the showjumpers!!

Nah, just that you have much more time to look at the eventers attire as they go round the jumpoff in collected canter :p

Oooh dear, I can see I've started something now. I think everyone in the whole universe, whatever their chosen discipline looks equally fabulous & gorgeous. Hows that?? But I have to say I love my Equiport jacket more than a greeny browny tweedy one.....

I do unaffiliated SJ at local level and the shows in the summer. Tweed is very common and thats what i wear with a shirt and tie, cream/beige jods, long boots/gaiters. Most people i know where tweed because they also do the working hunter classes.

Just go safe and wear a stock and a normal hat, im not a big fan of these modern shiny ones.

Don't think so. I was told off for wearing tweed last time I BSJA'd (about 2 years ago) was the first time I'd done it for 20 years and was only BN. I much prefer tweed.

maybe, but in this case we are talking about low level unaffiliated sj which you can either wear tweed or navy/black.
i see alot of people in tweed sj at shows.

bsja may be different i don't know

well, i have:

a navy sj jacket
a navy show/dressage jacket
a showing tweed jacket
and another tweed jacket for eventer trials!!!
:D

and anyway for LOCAL UNAFILLIATED sj it doesn't matter, a place i go you could wear a floresant pink jumper and they wouldn't care!!! :p

I have a navy jacket, pale blue stock shirt without stock, white jods andblack boots and gaiters :) i prefer navy jackets to black usually! but you can wear whatever you like really! i've also worn tweed jacket and shirt and tie, i think the least smart thing you can wear is a hat with a really faded cover on it, just my opinion though! :) i've seen people wear full BSJA wear (JW jump jacket, matching hat etc) to a small unaff place - nice for bigger shows but... :S

Can I also add that what ever your hair length it should be in a bun or net unless you are a junior. My pet hate is to see hair just tied back on adults when showjumping

You need to wear a blingy helmet, at least one item of Kingsland clothing, a jacket with your name embroidered onto it, something pink, a JW saddlecloth and your horse/pony MUST at all times wear fly/ear covers.

Hope this helps. ;-) I can be more specific if you like but this should cover the very basics.

The judge in this case was very wrong. BS rule book clearly states traditional hacking jackets are permitted.

I agree, but then I was once pulled up after my round & told by the BS judge that I shouldn't be jumping a pony in seniors, err yes I can if she is registered as a horse. I then toddled off to the organiser with her BS registration card & he agreed it was fine, but I do think if judges are judging, they should at least know the rules!
