Hi What is the correcy attire for showing (in-hand) a native cob - 18 months old and is it the same for an Appy youngster. Any advice would be gratefully recieved
These are some of my showing outfits for Stinky who is a traditional cob and they are shown with the same turnout as for hunters/cobs/natives.
This is a recent photo, I am two stone overweight and bald, (chemo does horrible things to you) hence not as smart as I could be.
For inhand I have dark brown boots, comfortable and good grip as I need to get a move on with Stinky. When I have hair - it is put into a bun as can be seen in the other pictures. I now have very short hair so do nothing with it, but as soon as I can get it into a pony tail, I will then attach a false bun made from my hair when it was cut short prior to chemo to use.
The only thing I change for ridden classes, is my hat for a harnessed one and wear cream or sand coloured breeches and long black boots.
This is my other outfit - which I normally wear when I am not carrying an extra 2 stone as I am in the first picture. I alternate between dark brown or beige in hand trousers depending on the conditions - if wet and muddy or on a black surface, the dark brown stays looking cleaner. Ideally you wear dark trousers for a light/white legged horse and light ones with a dark coloured horse.
Finally you can wear a trilby type hat if not a junior and many youngstock classes ask for hard hats as norm.
I do a mixture of local, affiliated and county level showing, and wear the same outfits at all levels - local showing standards are far higher than they were several years ago.
On the horse, Stinky now has his double bridle, but in the bottom picture, he is three years old and in his inhand - which is a hunter type noseband and more suitable for his type. When I show Farra our clydesdale, she is either in her bridle with a pelham, or a white halter which is correct for a heavy horse mare to be in.
Hope you have fun and the rules are simple - avoid black hat and gloves - hat can be any other colour and gloves any shade of brown or tan. Shirt - avoid white and always use a tie - stock is not correct. Jacket again black is no go, a tweed is very useful as many classes, they are correct. For some reason blue is not considered truely correct.
I use dark green on Farra as she is a chesnut sabino and green goes with just about anything and Stinky being a dark bay skewbald suits my brown jacket. Jods - again white is no go, beige, canary, sand are good.
Boots - ridden for an adult long black, though some people do use brown, for juniors and adults on M&Ms, you wear short brown boots though black is acceptable. Inhand, black or brown boots with a good grip, some rings are very slippery, and you will see some people with the welshies wearing trainers as they have to really leg it!
In hand - avoid black or blue jeans - smart cords or beige jeans are acceptable.
Finish off with a tie pin, hair net and a show cane - again avoid black.
Tack should ideally be brown, though some folks with piebalds prefer black.
For your types, no bling - plain browbands and have everything as clean and tidy as possible.
Ebay can be a great source - far better to buy good quality second hand than very cheap new I have found.
