you are correct BUT almost no one does!
So fancy seeing the cheekpiece break one day with someone just so they realise why you should have 2 reins
*puts her evil side back in the naughty corner*

OMG that would be awful, the whole bit would fall out

exactly hence why evil thought (wouldn't seriously want it to happen as plain dangerous
)
YOu are meant to ride with two reins as if you are keeping a contact and the cheek piece did for whatever reason break then the bit would remain in the mouth and you should be able to stop safely etc.
If you use only one rein and the cheekpiece snaps then the rein would literally fall off the bit and in turn as you say the bit would 'fall' out the mouth, and dependant on the bridle if a separate slip the bit could come off completely.
The second rein also limits the amount of pressure being exerted on the poll which is significant if only one rein is used. Personally hate running gags as bits mainly as they are so commonly misused (as are almost all gag bits!), and honestly if a rider cannot ride with two reins they should not be using that bit.....
My thoughts exactly, I don't know who advised her to use it tbh, but I know she used it for a sponsored ride and just kept it on.
Her horse is very strong, and she is willing to change bits but what to?
I suggested a pelham but I don't profess to be a bitting expert! any suggestions?
to be honest I hate 'advising' on bits without seeing horse and rider as a pair, because what would suit one horse would be completely unsuitable for another due to mouth conformation etc.
A pelham could well be a decent place to start especially as you can use roundings (which again I hate but better of two evils
but it really really infuriates me that the PC have banned curb straps on gags saying it makes them too harsh, shouldn't they just ban the bits full stop then as they are educated riders to use the bits incorrectly grrrrr
Asthe sider on work when pressure apply on poll (ie pulling), as for breaking, errrrrrrrrr poor maintence i would suggest and poor riding!!!!!
I ideas of riding with both is that you need extra break you pick up gag reins......, i hunted for many years in cheltenham gag and it's work for my horses.
But bear in mind the harder you pull, the harder a horse will pull and lean and a horse WILL always win in muscle power, BUT as humans we should have the extra brain cell to solve issue
