Sorry for the cross posting, as I have just posted this in NL, but then realised I am more likely to find the most experienced horse owners in here.

Has anyone used this? Any experience/opinions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Have had one in the past on it and it worked fab for him, far better than any other joint supplement.

Have just got another gone on it last week along with a course of adequan. Poor lad is basically buggered but we are giving him one last chance so hoping it will work.

I do think it depends on the damage done and how early we catch the changes in the joint to how well any supplement will work, but I am convinced it is one of the best available.

Bentley is on it at the moment and has FINALLY come sound after months and months (literally!) of battling with his intermittent lameness

It is £160 a pot from the local vet

however you can buy it direct for much less

May I ask, what was he diagnosed with, and which joint(s)? How many months has he been on it now? How long did you double dose/load him for, before you went for the usual measure? Is there anything else that you have used to treat him? Cheers

My mare is pretty buggered too

But she is *more* than happy in herself, and we want to do everything possible to help her and prevent it getting any worse.

My vet has recommended this, and I like his reasoning/explanation, and am happy to give it a try, but I just wanted some feedback from those who've actually used it

Did you horse return to any level of work? Which joints were you treating? Or did it just help with field soundness?

Thanks

The very brief history is that he had a poor start (bad nutrition and horrendously overgrown feet) which *may* have caused a weakness in the joints, although he had been sound in work so this is rather contentious amongst the vets!

He came in lame from the field in February. We suspect he twisted it or got it stuck in a pot hole

Via several red herrings and many months of box rest, steroid injections and various other supplements the vets finally identified 'rough' edges typical of arthritis type problems to the navicular bursar area and the coffin bone (P3)

He had a steroid injection into his neck and more recently directly into the coffin joint and has had various supplements including D&H mobility, Premierflex HA, Cortaflex and cod liver oil. The Premierflex was showing the best results but got stopped by the vets when we did the coffin joint steroid injections as he wanted to minimise the number of other factors that could affect the outcome.

He has been on the Cosequin for a month now and is still on the loading dose, I noticed a significant improvement about a week after we started feeding it and he has made a steady improvement ever since

He will be going onto the normal dose once this pot is finished and is due to be represented at the vets just before christms

What is the story with your horse?

He has Arthritis in his Coffin and Pastern Joints in both front feet, as well as non-articular ringbone in both fronts and his right hind. Cosequin didn't seem to have much of an impact, and he was still lame after joint injections.

However, he is currently very sound and well and in light work. I have changed Farriers, which I think may have helped slightly (althoug I had no real reason to doubt my old Farrier, he just wouldn't come out to my new yard!). He is turned out for at least 12 hours a day and has Magnetic Boots on for 4 hours when he first comes in swapping for bandages on overnight. He is fed Devil's Claw and Nupafeed Flex GLM, in the lowest quantaties for his size. All of this seems to be keeping him ticking over, so I am loathed to change a thing!

Although, the ringbone in the right hind was the first thing to affect him, a few years ago now. He was joint injected then and went sound, the nupafeed didn't seem to have much of an impact, but NAF Superflex did

So I guess it's all trial and error!

In fact I only gave Nupafeed a second go after my Mum used the dog version for her 12 year old retired gundog. He was unable to walk without arching his back, wouldn't go up the stairs and basically lost all interest in life. He was on his last week before the one way trip to the Vet. Mum tried the Nupafeed as a last resort and he is still with us and causing havoc, showing up the younger dogs with his turn of speed.
She has taken him off it to see if it had really made a difference or it was co-incidence, and although he didn't relapse quite as bad, he was definately stiffer and stopped running around. Put him back on and he was once again an nuisance.

Have a look into Suppleaze Gold, I e-mailed them at the weekend to request a free 14 day sample so am going to give it a go. They compare themselves to Synoquin, which as far as I know is very similar to Cosequin, Suppleaze Gold is also a lot cheaper than both these:

I had a comprehensive e-mail back from them as I asked for info comparing their product to SuperFlex.....Worth a 5 min e-mail to pick their brain???

I use Suppleaze Gold after doing all the research. TGM found an amazing website that compares all the ingrediants but I have forgotten what it is called.
