The vet as told me the best thing to use for my horse with arthritis is, Cosequin. She said it cost more then more other supplements, but it does the best job for the horse. It will cost me £150 & she said it should last around 6 months. The only problem is that when I first start using it, it will go very fast as I will need to give more to start her off with. She also said that I could give it to the other horses.
Have you used it & if so what do think about it? How long did it take for you to see an improvement in your horse?

I use it and after the initial loading dose she is on a scoop a day in her dinner. I noticed a difference in about a week and she hasn't been lame since although at the same time I started the cosequin she had a course of cartrophen injections so I dont know 100% if it was the cosequin but as I said she hasn't been lame since. My insurence are paying for it up until September but after that I'll have to foot the (big) bill myself so may change on to a cheaper supliment.
 
The saddle-up forum has a spread sheet on there which shows how much of each ingredient is in the well known supplements.
It's very interesting and well worth a look.

My vet said the same about Synequin until I showed him the spec for Riaflex Complete (which is a third the price for a better spec.)

ALL the research suggests that a horse requiring a joint supplement should be administered a daily dose of at least the following:

10,000mg/10g Glucosamine
10,000mg/10g MSM
4000mg/4g Chondroitin
(based on a 500kg horse)

Levels that are substantially lower than this will give reduced benefits, and minimal dose rates are likely to be completely ineffective especially in horses that are competing or working hard.

Many supplements give considerably less Chondroitin (which is the most expensive ingredient) - and 'maintenance doses' are usually two low to be much use at all.

I've just completed a spreadsheet comparing Cosequin, Equistro Flexidin (which I use), Synequin and Suppleaze Gold, including cost per tub (first place I found on the internet) and cost per month (Maintenance).... they are surprisingly affordable! lol! 100% recommend Cosequin, it works!

Don't buy it from this country though, but it off American Ebay and even if it gets caught for customs charges, it works out much cheaper than buying it anywhere in the UK.

I did a spreadsheet a while back, comparing recommended maintenance doses of a lot of supplements in all price ranges and it was actually surprising how many of the "cheap" ones actually worked out more expensive when you really read the feeding rates as they are much higher than the more expensive ones.

I certainly won't be changing from Cosequin any time soon.
