Cosmetic surgery on mares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Thursday the vet came to scan the broodmare who is here on livery. Chatting away we discussed various gynie problem thet mares/women have and.................

I heard for the first time that some riders opt to have their comp mares 'Caslicked' so that they arent embarrassed by farty noises while their trusty steed jumps

. Now, Im quite sure that said 'farty noises' are accepted from geldings/stallions so why the bloody hell isnt it accepted from the fairer sex????? Is this another attempt to put us down?????
Would you do this to your mare? Im all for male castration after 40/45 to save us all the hassle of prostrate trouble. The sufferers, what do they say? Nooooooooooooo! So bugger off with your caslick jobbies. Farting is healthy and free

Oh, I always assumed Caslicks were performed for health reasons rather than to stop the air expulsion!

It seems a bit dramatic just for cosmetic reasons. Thinking about it I am not surprised though, they paralyse tails for no other reason than appearance so sewing up bits and pieces isn't so odd perhaps. Does a farty mare jump worse than a non farty one? Mad!

I assumed just like you..seemingly some of the top riders have different ideas and find it off putting

. Shouldnt the be concentrating on other things like..distances, turns, micro seconds and co? Nah, farty noises detracts from their manlyness

lol I know it's not funny but talking about fanny farting is, however my mare has had this operation, but I hasten to add I bought her like it. She is an imported Dutch Warmblood and I have no idea why the operation was performed. Come to think of it, she's not a particulary farty horse anyway, unlike my little grey boy!!

I know that some swedish trotter mares are Caslicked, either for health reasons or because they suck up/in air while training and competing, and I think there's some statistic that shows that such mares that suck up air, competes better (runs faster) after they've been Caslicked.

does she still have it?? an why for lord sake. What man does to animals is appauling!!!

i know of caslick mares when in foal for infection reason. was told to do it to my little Welsh C mare as she sucks in air but shes had 4 foals on the moors un-caslicked and shes fine shes never been infected and foals are always healthy. vet also said to caslick when not infoal to prevent infection but shes not been in foal for 2 yrs and she swabs clean all the time.

if its not for medical reasons (which i question anyway) then i thinks its horrid to do that to a mare!!

Well, I know mares are sometimes caslicked for foaling reasons, but to do it for 'vanity' is just sick

How bizarre. I believe fanny-farts can be quite uncomfortable for mares and of course they can cause all kinds of problems with fertility, but to have it done because the noise is distracting...

Are you quite sure the person who told you this wasn't just talking out of their own 'bits'?

If a mare was sucking in enough air to be making farting noises then the conformation must be bad and she would be at higher risk of getting infections, even if she is not a breeding animal.
I'd rather have it caslicked and lower the risk. A mare with good conformation of the 'bits' wouldn't make a noise, thus wouldn't suck in air and be at low risk of infection.

This is JUST what I was going to say! Well said

One of my own mare has a very sloping vulva and to prevent internal infection she has a caslik. She's never made a noise down there, so I haven't a clue whether the caslik stops this or not, but from a prevention point of view I do not see the harm. It's done under a local anaesthetic, takes the vet a few moments to do and doesn't affect the mare in anyway afterwards.

Jeepers.... won't be worse than those stitches after childbirth some of us women have to endure
