Cost effective none straw bedding?

Miscanthus - cheaper then shavings, very absorbent and works well for deep littering. Mine is in overnight and goes through a bale a week.
Or straw/wood pellets.

Cheapest I have found lately is Unibed which is chopped straw I think.
I buy shavings for £8 a bale but have to go and pick them up directly.

Straw pellets. Was sceptical but the majority of the horses on our yard are on them and they are fab, really nice firm and clean bed, looks comfier than shavings. We are switching to them from shavings this week x

I use straw pellets under straw - makes the straw go much further as it soaks up the wee and there is still a nice cosy bed on top. I’d suggest this but if you want no straw then shavings and straw pellets mixed is also a good combination.

Wood pellets, especially if the horse is clean. I tried both straw and miscanthus last winter but found they weren't as absorbent, although it might have been that particular brand as everybody else said they were better.

Wood pellets have calmed down in price a bit - if you like a massive deep bed then they probably won't work but over rubber mats they do the job for me.
There's a knack to getting the amount of water right (quite horse dependent) one horse I soak them in a bucket until fully fluffy - he's super clean, another I put in unsoaked and some I put a sprinkle of water over the top
Pick out droppings and one fork full of the wettest part - then mix and you're done.

miscanthus I tried and found it impossible to separate poo from clean bedding so ended up chucking away tonnes and it took ages to muck out.

Leftover hay with a little shavings underneath. Zero wastage practically. I love love loved cardboard bedding BUT it’s become so expensive it’s no longer viable.
